A few mornings recently I've seen a community speed watch at work as I pass through a village on my way to work (Cotton End, Beds if anyone knows it).

These hardy individuals stood there at 7.15am have the full works, a board that flashes your speed on the way past and a smiley/sad face, the clipboard and that holier than thou, NIMBY look about them.

Do they have any legal clout though? If I was clocked by them doing a hellraising 34mph would I go to hell? What about if I tried to set a land speed record and travel through at a silly speed?

I'm intrigued as to what the point of these schemes are if there can be no fines or punishment issued.

I should point out that at other times there is a Scamera Van parked in the village a bit further down the road.

don't think they have any legal clought, there was one a while back in Blisworth, I received a letter from the police informing me that the community speed watch had 'caught' me doing 33 in a 30 and that I should be carefull in the future

I'm sure if caught speeding my them, all they can do is pass your details to the local plod who will send you a letter telling you that your are very naughty and not to do it again. I don't think you can get points if they catch you.

Do a long rolling burnout past them, well below the speedlimit.

Are those the same electronic speed boards that seem to be calibrated about every 10years and pretty much just guess your speed as you approach??

(on my commute to work i pass 3, and apparently, in the space of just 5miles my speedo has become about 5mph different as i approach each board............)

My mate got caught by one, got a letter through the post from the boys in blue telling him to behave himself! No points or fine, just a warning.

Yep if your caught and their data ties up ie colour of car, make of car and Reg
You will get a letter from the Police

If you are then caught again within 6 months the Police will make a visit to your home

Drive through it really slowly, but with a child from the previous village clinging to your wipers.

Yep they were talking about doing it in our Village last year

Most people commented that it would be a complete waste of time

There's one in the next village along from me. I don't mind them so much, I mean they're out there in the cold with a runny nose and I'm sat in a nice warm car, so I think I got the better deal

What does annoy me though is that you get a flashing amber when you're doing exactly 30, same as when you're doing more than 30. Do 29 and it's nice green happy things

They use official police equipment (laser guns) which are all calibrated, and they are given training in their operation.

As has been said, if you get caught, you will get a slap on the wrist letter in the post. If you do it again, you will receive a second letter, which will tell you that your details are being passed to your local road policing unit.

Have them in our village, I stopped and a smug looking old boy came over thinking I was going to praise their good work but was quite taken a back when I asked if he had nothing better to do than pretend to be a policeman in his spare time !

Got a mention in our local newsletter that not all locals appear to be in favour.

Beats me how the jittery old fools can even accurately put the laser on the oncoming car.

And the main point is they are usually set up near schools and unsafe areas

Which to be honest is correct

If they snag you the Bibs send you a letter.

I have heard from the reliable chaps in the pub that if a speedwatch place has loads of speeders then the real police will show up one morning and start handing out real tickets – but this may not be true.

What a bunch of bloody idiots these people are. What's safer for all - 30mph with the drivers attention focussed entirely on the speedo, or 10-15% either way with your eyes focussed on the road and surroundings looking for hazards?

I despair about this issue I really do.

or 1st gear in a TVR, or other appropriately noisy car. maybe they would get the message that loud doesn't mean 200mph?

Wish full thinking perhaps

A BiB mate of mine reckons some places do this to build up evidence of speeding to justify a police speed trap or camera going in to the area later. He also reckons when he's then been in with an official speed trap it's usually the residents of the village that are the habitual speeders biggrin
