I have emailed a couple of dealers to see if they'd be interested in swapping their car for mine plus give me the balance in cash. No reply as yet so wondered if this is not a desirable transaction for a dealer? I've obtained the Glasses Guide trade in value and have been basing my figures on that. The difference is only about £2K, so not a massive amount. Just wondered what dealers thought of this.

Crikey, how long is a piece of string?

Any dealer will want to make money, so if the deal works for them they'll do it!

Is the car you want a bit down market for the dealer? Is your car what the dealer seems to specialise in?

If so he'll rip your arm off, if your car would be his most expensive and the one you want one of his usuals then you'll have more trouble.

I've done it before.

In retrospect, might have been better selling the px privately and negotiating a cash deal with the dealer for the new car...

You collect your new car, they give you the keys for it and a cheque for the balance between your new one and old one. Easy.

Is the car you want to px worth more than the one you want from the dealer's point of view?

From a forecourt to forecourt point of view you may think yours is £2000 more than the one you want, however the dealer will be looking at your car's trade value when comparing it to his car he has on stock - He'll also be considering the saleability of both cars, and therefore how long each would be likely to sit around before he could offload the car.

He might also, quite sensibly, be reluctant to enter into a negotiation by email (or not have the time), and be more appreciative of a visit and a face to face chat - if you haven't visited already.

Any negotiation of any px will ultimately boil down to a cost-to-change negotiation between you and the vendor.

I have approached them via email as it gives the opportunity to send pictures. Also, the dealers are a fair way away from me so don't want to spend hours getting there without a good idea of the outcome.

I believe my car may be quite difficult to move on as it's a bit of a niche vehicle. It's in the PH classified and it's the only white 2009 IS-F.
