quick question for the Bibs

I've seen these number plates (supposedly legal) that have only the minimum amount of white background around the letters that the law requires, but with background of required reflectivity etc. Also the short plates that are available if you only have a 5 or 6 figure reg.

This strikes me as a good way of reducing the target area available to laser speed traps.

Are they really legal?

I'm definately not a BIB. But I can say, they are OK. There needs to be 16mm clear of reflective around each digit, and any spaces inherent in the reg must be at least twice this amount (typically 33mm). The font must be clear and legible. This only applies for old style reg's. I believe the new (51 onward) regs have to be of a standard font and the rules a re stricter. If you want these plates, get them, but make sure they are stamped with a BSAU145a marking to be sure about it.
I really don't think it will stop the fixed cameras getting you though. And lets face it, any plates looking slightly non standard will draw police attention. And them coppers with hand held speed guns will probably see a small target as a good challenge.
Best way to avoid the law with numberplates is have a completely unassuming reg and standard looking plate.
