E39 530i loud exhaust

I have a 2001 530 with 82k on the clock. I'm a bit surprised at the level of engine noise from inside the car - to be honest it sounds more like a(slightly rough) four cylinder than a refined six. I've had the exhaust checked, all seems OK. Maybe that's just how it is - anyone had a similar experience?

I've not found that with my e39 530i Sport (2001 - facelift). If anything it would be nice to hear more of the straight 6 on occasion!

There is absolutely no exhaust noise at all from my 530i Sport. A pity, its a shame it hasn't got more of a burble without being OTT, as per the 330Ci.

Indeed; my 528i sounds glorious when you red-line it, but in everyday wafting it's silent.

Friend of mine reckons it's quieter inside than his neighbour's Silver Shadow.

Thanks for your replies folks. I would have expected the engine to be as refined as you are all experiencing - it looks as if I must have a problem with my exhaust, although everything has all checked out OK.

I have a 530i exhaust and unless you hammer it i think the car is too quiet.

Compared to a 330ci which has a nice drone to it its very silent
