Car serial number

On removing the driver door panel and dash today, I noticed the number 1799 written in indelible marker on the inside of the door panel, the back of the dash and scribed into a metal tag pop rivetted onto the inside of the door. Am I right in thinking this means my Griff was number 1799 (from approx 3000)?

Okay, but I'm surprised they built that many by October of 1995. I thought it took them 10 years to build 3000!

Shoot me down if I'm wrong, but I believe the build numbers are not model specific. At best, they may be specific to a particular type of chasis. So they would be shared between Griffs and Chims.

Fair enough. I suppose it's a system they use to keep all the parts for a particular car together. You know what happens when the system goes wrong - the VW Polo Harlequin!
