I'm just in the process of renewing my car insurance.

I have been on the comparison websites and found that if I add my Mum as a named driver, the quote drops by nearly £100. I only get to see her for about 3 weekends a year but she may well want to drive my car during those times.

Are there any consequences for the named driver? For example, if I have to make a claim, would there be any impacts on her - would she have to say that she has had a claim as she was named on a policy associated with one?

Are there any other implications?

She is a little apprehensive about being named on another policy and I want to out her mind at rest.

Thanks

I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that a person named on someone's policy would not have to declare an accident if they were not personally responsible.

The question is have YOU had an accident or claim, not are you a named driver on a policy where someone else has had an accident etc.

No risk at all as far as I know & is commonly recommended to reduce insurance for young people. I'm a named driver in my childrens car insurance as I drive their cars occasionally. Knocks over £100 off the prices....

It wouldn't be an issue that she lives around 200 miles away from me and hence her usage will be very infrequent? The comparison sites don't ask where the named driver lives, only what relation they are to me.

Nope. I always recommend it to customers at work. Biggest discount is if you have a spouse or live in partner to add even if they will never drive it. But nothing wrong with adding her at all. The way the insurance company's look at it is that it is reducing the risk (as stupid as it seems ha). Just add her as a casual driver.

Only downside would be if your mum crashed it you would lose your no claims.
