So, I fancy swapping my roof with a plastic rear screen for one with a glass screen on my mk1 MX5. So, over the last few months I've kept my eye on all the classifieds both on this, and other forums.

One pops up, apparently taken off a car that is being turned into a track slag with a glass window - perfect!

It's a little bit far away from me, but it's a good price. I call and speak with the chap who tells me about "one 25mm tear that has been repaired". Other than that, in good condition.

So, after spending 90 minutes traipsing around the north fking circular, I get there and have a gander. To say that a collendar would be more watertight is probably an understatement...and there are 3 (badly) repaired splits between 50 and 75mm long in the location he described along with numerous others around the roof.

The seller basically says "sorry mate" and that's it.

So, to come back to my original question, why the fking hell do you not advertise something properly. I'm not some who's going to rock up (hehe) and buy it for the agreed price, no matter what the condition is. All you're doing is wasting my life an yours. It's not like I've asked your opinion on whether there are any tears or something. It's fking factual.

Oh well - that's some of my life wasted - now having a pizza before having to endure the ing north circ...again for no gain.

fk IT!!!

What is your budget? The previous owners of mine had a brand new one fitted for the measly sum of £400 fitted. Not a tuppence but not a bad price for a brand new glass window roof I dont think

Sorry - just worn out after long day at work and not enough effort to put into it!

No set budget as such. You can get the mohair with glass rear window bought and fitted for not an obscene amount of money like you say - just as little as possible!!

I wouldn't want to spend £400 on the roof to be honest with you!! smile

I can understand that, I wouldn't either, glad that the last owners loved 'Clive' the MX5 as much as they did!

Jack Smiths in Swansea will do a Mohair with glass window for less than 300 quid, fitted.

Did you find the hood for sale on a place with a nutty kind of name? - it really would't surprise me that it was a heap of leaking crap.

Maybe wink

Where do you recommend looking for this type of thing then?

The problem with Jack Smiths is the getting to Swansea wink

Well, I bought my car and a few bits from the nutty place, but it seems to attract the more, shall we say, 'chavvy' end of MX5 ownership - lots of 'slamming', stretched tyres and body kits. Usually not the sharpest tools in the box and with no perception of what's good condition and what's fked.

I'd stick with the known and reputable breakers - some of them advertise in the nutty place, or try eBay.

However, as I don't know how far you are from Swansea, I can't really say if it's worth the journey or not - one good thing about going to Jack Smiths is that you can take in a weekend in the Brecon Beacons / Mid Wales on some of the best driving roads the UK has to offer.

I guess I'll just keep an eye out for something else.

The odd thing is the chap didn't try to offer me a few quid off either.

Oh well. Onwards.
