A4 S-Line diesel 140bhp or 170bhp?
Discussion
Hi chaps,
Yes I know we are talking diesels here - a dirty word on the PH forums.
I do quite a bit of business mileage but don't get car allowance or a company car. Looking to change my car and don't want to spend much more than £10k. A4 S-Lines around 2006/ 2007 are looking tempting.
It has to be S-Line and diesel and whatever I get will be getting remapped.
Being PHer naturally I am drawn more to the 170bhp, but there are a lot of 140bhps about quite a bit cheaper.
Does anyone have experience with these cars? Is the difference between the two only map-deep, or do the internals differ?
If I am getting a remap does this make the original power output largely academic anyway, or does the 170bhp remap further than the 140bhp?
Any advice gratefully received! Berating me about driving a diesel: not so much...

I’m not 100% on this but I think the 140bhp and 170bhp outputs come from different engines, a 1.9l unit and a 2.0l unit respectively. As such, it would be more than just a remap to get the different power levels. I’d assume the 170bhp unit will map further than the 140bhp unit but I guess it all depends on whether you’re looking for power or economy.
140 and 170 are from the same 2.0 unit.
Both overall great cars. The 170 is more likely to suffer from DPF problems, and does not like regular short stop start journeys. If you spend a fair amount of time on the motorway/A roads this should be less of a concern.
A the OP previously mentioned there are many more 140's available thus making them cheaper.
My advise as always is to be open to either and buy the best car you can.

Revo say...
140 remaps to 180, torque goes from 236 to 289.
170 remaps to 200, torque goes from 258 to 310.
So there must be a further difference... likely to be Turbo. But could be intake / exhaust.
If I was looking at one I'd just get the best car whether it was a 140 or 170... once remapped there's not going to be a great deal of difference!

I hope you only drive on billiard table smooth roads. They have the most appalling ride of any modern car I've been in.
My wife has a A4 Avant S Line and are both very happy with it. However if someone else said the ride was too firm for them, then that would be a very fair comment. You cant assume because you dont like it no one else will do either, or vice versa.
From my point of veiw as a trader I am mainly interested in what is likely to sell the quickest, and I would always choose an Audi S Line over SE. I guess that must mean the market seems to like them too.

Are you employed or self employed? If the former, I don't understand why your employer would not cover the cost of your travelling on their behalf? and
