Just changed the battery on my '95 4.0HC (a job I'm pretty familiar with, very careful with the ECU and all the attendant gubbins, yadda yadda).

Key in ignition, all usual lights, but no whirr from the fuel pump. Turn the key further and the engine turns like crazy but without any interest in firing.

I was SO careful I can't believe I have broken anything - OK the alarm set itself a couple of times when I was connecting up but surely the ECU isnt that easy to knacker is it ?

Someone tell me there's a hidden magic reset switch somewhere ?

When I was putting the carpets in my Griffith, I had to move the battery and ECU. When I tried to start the car, I had exactly the same problem as you, engine turns, but no fuel pump!
Turns out I had somehow shorted something out and blew the fuse for the ECU.
I'd check your fuse first!!

Maybe there's a fuel pump relay among the various connections in that mass of wiring and you've knocked it loose? If everything else works thats where I'd start looking.

There is a fuel cut off switch which activates if you roll the car - the reset button is up under the dash, behind the glove pocket. I'm not sure if activating this stops the fuel pump but I guess that's what it does ...

Oh, I'd check the wires are connected to the fuel pump correctly as well. They're a bit exposed underneath the car.

UPDATE
Well, I went back to the car the next morning, jotted down the ratings for the fuses I was about to visit Halfords for and I thought I'd just give it one more go.

Key in, turn to first stop - Whirrr.
Key to next stop - Vroooommmm !

Who knows. Thanks for the help anyway.
