useless for lighting up the road, good for being seen though.

I remember somebody in the labs at uni made a similar project except it was a matrix of LEDs on the spokes, allowing words & pictures to be projected. Clever stuff.

My only other thought after watching the little film again is; how well are they seen from directly front/rear on? all the shots are of a side on view.

I'm sure I've seen that idea for sale somewhere - I just (childishly) imagined all the rude things you could programme into it...

At the moment I've got scotchlite stuck to my rims: it's black in appearance (so doesn't look crap in daylight) but bright white when a light hits it. And because I've got discs on my commuter I've got the stuff stuck on the sides of the rim too, i.e. the braking surface if you had rim brakes, for great visibility.
