Joy goes through hell- BMW E36 M3
Discussion
Hi everyone, i thought my story might make for some interesting reading, I owned a very near perfect cosmos shwartz black 1994 BMW E36 M3 3.0, and added ZX-1 Micro oil metal treatment to most moving metal parts- engine, cooling system, gearbox, power steering system, even added to the diff oil.
Back in october 2009 i had a huge accident in the beloved M3, due to the sheer speed at the time the accident was very distructive and extremely violent, the throttle got stuck open and 340bhp propelled me upside down a few times, my car eventually came to rest on its side, my guess is the accident lasted prob 20 seconds from start to finish.
For that 20 seconds my tuned engine (which has no rev limiters or top speed limiters) had the throttle held wide open, which im certain you will agree would of decimated most engines, the shocking part is one of the first things to break off my car at the time of the accident was the oil cooler and the alloy sump, both were ripped off very early on in the crash and as a result lost all engine oil almost instantly.
When the dust settled and i had done all the "am i still alive" checks i realised my engine minus the sump and oil cooler was still screaming at almost 9000rpm, i quickly shut it down and began to climb out of my once perfect M3.
the shell as you can imagine was completely wrote off, the only things to survive were.....
1. Me
2. My engine and gearbox (even though it was at top revs for quite a while with zero oil inside).
After mulling over a few different options i sourced another E36 M3 3.0 coupe shell, the guy had removed the engine and gearbox to put into an E30 he was racing in the coming season. The shell was an absolutely mint Avus blue coupe, it had some nice bonus trick bits too, braided brake lines, polybushed throughout and had been in dry storage for around 3 years, i had everthing this car needed from the twisted mess in my unit and so snapped the avus one up with very little hesitation. Over the next month me and couple of lads worked day and night transferring everything over, i brought the bits i still needed- oil cooler, sump, radiator and various small bits and clips. The M3 is now finished, the paint on it is original and is perfect with that deep ‘wet’ shine you get with a good avus blue one, it has strut braces front and rear and the same motorsport chipped ecu from the previous car with no speed limiter or rpm limit, the polybushes are awesome and the braided lines reduce any flex and fade. Its a june 1993 car - BMW started producing the E36 M3 3.0 coupe in March 1993, mine is one of the first 500 E36 M3s produced and is in almost perfect original condition. It still has protective covers under the edges of the bootspoiler and various other original stickers dotted around, no rust at all anywhere. All in all a much better shell than my first one, just a long winded way of getting there.
