She barely used her phone. They are talking about data roaming charges.

She had an app which was connecting to the net to update, so her phone was being used to transmit data, why is that the providers fault?

hahaha

i love it how the phone companies let this happen, yet you don't pay a 15 quid bill on time and they cut you off.

When i went abroad, I was paranoid about roaming charges so just turned the phone off and used it when I needed to..

Tbh, £5k on a 2 week phone bill is fking ridiculous anyway. Regardless of what it was being used for, a couple of hundred meg of data is NOT worth five thousand pounds IMO

Why didn't you just turn Data Roaming off and use your phone normally?

I did but I don't trust my phone, they are hardwired into the network and I am sure it would be harder to argue costs back in blighty than stopping any chance of them.

A few weeks ago was at a wedding in Biarritz and made a point of NOT using roamin on data. Phone set up to take everything else bar emails and roaming data when abroad.

Landed and walking to passport control, got the dreaded text message confirming my £2 daily charge was for data roaming...

Thank God I did some homework and didnt expect to wander around the world and have some little phone bod lay a red carpet at my feet.

Anyway, meant to challenge the roaming data charge but figure there are better ways of spending my time/money?

Not that this will help the discussion at all beer although can give plenty of pointers in the restaurant threads smile

On the iPhone there is an OS Level "data roaming off" switch that overrides any app, browser or email.

It's stupid for a couple of reasons. Firstly, as you say it's an absolutely stupid amount of money for the service provided that I doubt bears any relation to the cost. Second, the phone company are absolutely stupid for allowing the bill to get that high in the first place without contacting the account holder. Third, why should the average person have to know in detail about the functioning of phone networks in order not to get ripped off. Phone companies are very keen to sell the ability to use phones abroad, but the certainly don't make it obvious that the potential costs of doing so can be very high, or that a person might need to take action in order to prevent their phone from doing things without them realising.

Not everyone is clued up on technology, and it is ridiculous to expect them to be.

I bought this car, i had no idea it could exceed the speed limit, can i get off the charge please?

It's down to the user, end of story.

You get a text advising the costs when you turn your phone on abroad, try reading it maybe?

There are a lot of people who are ignorant of many things we use. People may buy such a thing and never know what it does. And the terms and conditions are written in plain English so easy that anyone can understand....no.... wait a minute..

I think the rips off will continue knowingly knowing the pad locks are coming for sharp practices. Opps, did I say rip off? I mean obfuscation.

The car has a little dial indicating the current speed of travel. The phone company allow the bill to reach more than 100 times the usual amount without so much as calling the user to advise them? Did they not have her number?
