Is undertaking bad?
Discussion
I've noticed overtaking can sometimes provoke a reaction, and I don't mean potentially dangerous overtakes as a reaction would be expected.
But I occasionally undertake, yes I know it isn't exactly a "smart idea" but sometimes I find myself on the "fast" lane behind someone at 60mph with no one infront of them, and yet they don't seem to move over, anyway I find undertaking seems to make most people angry.
I never attempt dangerous undertakes and only do them as a last resort.
Is undertaking bad? Are all undertakers
s? Do you undertake?

s? Do you undertake?I do it very rarely, and only when someone is sitting in the outside lane apparently oblivious to me wanting to get past. I have noticed it can sometimes provoke an EXTREME reaction - I had some knob in a sad old 3 series go past me again, swerve in front and slam on his brakes and then buzz around annoying me for miles afterwards until I lost him in traffic.
A friendly "I'm here, wake up please and move over (you dozy
)" flash of the lights seems to also provoke a negative response too, as does putting on your right indicator to say "yes, I do want to go past" like they do on the continent. Typical British spineless passive aggressive nonsense I suppose.

Depends on how you do it I think. If you are 100% sure that people jsut drive in whatever lane they want, and aren't going to change, I say go ahead. Otherwise, don't risk it.
What I notice though is that most times as I switch lanes to undertake they seem to want to change lanes..I don't intentionally undertake but if I'm cruising on a quiet motorway in the left lane and come across someone sat in the middle lane going slower, I'll just carry on my way.
I don't see any issue with this. What pisses me off is people who jump into any lane just to get one car ahead on a busy motorway, often pushing in leaving very little space.

This is a very common and worrying trend. Says to me they were simply not paying any attention to the road around or behind them. ZOmbie.Personally i now pass either side without slowing. I simply cannot be bothered to waste any more time on the inconsiderate clueless daydreaming pricks that are the majority of other motorists that i have to "share" the road with.
I'll happily undertake if there's a get out plan...
If they're sat aimlessly in the right lane, and there's nothing in the left, there's nothing illegal in keeping up with the flow of traffic.
I only tend to do it if there's a hard shoulder or somewhere I could swerve onto if the worst came to the worst - you never know if they'll just drift back into the inside lane again without looking, especially if they're not expecting you to go by. As such, I don't tend to hang around when doing it either - the less time I'm alongside them the less chance of them swapping lanes when I'm in a vulnerable place.

I do it almost on a daily basis now.
There are loads of drivers who on a 2 lane dc or mway just sit in lane 2 permanently.
I'm usually in no rush to get to work - I aim for 60mph - and yet i find myself sailing past loads of drivers in lane 1 without changing my lane or speed.
The most common scenario is that folk come charging down a slip road and immediately dive into lane 2. That driver then has to brake and after forcing their way into lane 2 has caused everybody else in lane 2 to back up and to slow down.
Take a section of road with a junction every 2 miles or so and you end up with lane 2 carrying 75% of the traffic.
