Hi All,

I'm looking into starting a subscription with a car magazine, but not really sure whats out there. I'm interested in all sorts really, recently took a shine to classics and modern classics. I like reading about stuff that the average joe could afford to run.

I've been having a nosey at Classic & Sports Car, and used to buy the odd Fast Car magazine in my teens (didn't know any better). So what else is out there that makes for interesting reading?

Then I would suggest Retro Cars and Practical Classics, Classic and Sportscar is more for the gentleman collector and really high end stuff, PC is more 40's to 80's with the odd 90s model popping in, Retro Cars is great, some inspirational stuff, mainly modified classics, Retro Rides is a website you may appreciate as well.

Thanks J4cko, will have a browse at those. Modified classics is something I'm interested in. I was looking a cracking Hillman Avenger Tiger in the classifieds yesterday, wish the money would drop into my hand to purchase it smile

I don't get it that often, but I'm quite impressed with Car when I do pick up a copy. It's all modern stuff (nothing historic) but it has a nice balance of informative news/reviews and more indulgent features - it's a bit like getting Autocar and Evo in one volume. biggrin

Just looking at PPC's website under Staff cars, one of them has a 27 litre Rover SD1! I love that kind of mentality. Going to browse Retro Rides too. Loving the suggestions so far guys, cheers smile

Octane tends to be Evo for old cars, a bit like Classic and Sportscar, a good read but full of ads for very expensive classic exotics on the continent, its a bit Playboy compared to Retro Cars and Practical CLassics that are more "Readers Wifes", i.e. attainable for most of us.

For the record I don't own any "jazz mags" but I get what you're saying wink

I can only really justify one sub, so this is going to be a hard descision.

I got a Classic & Sportscar sub for father's day. It's ok but it does get a bit tiring of having the same month after month, particularly as I only really like it for the more modern classics (1970's onwards). I must admit anything pre-1960 (roughly) does little for me.

I dip into Octane occaisionally but as others have said it really makes you feel poor!

You could try a few out on cheap offers at the moment, EVO and Octane are doing 3 copies for £1, Autocar and Auto Express 6 copies for £1, F1 Racing is 3 copies for £1 and Autosport 6 copies for £1.

Yeah I was thinking of taking advantage of all the £1 offers, but I'm lazy and it would bug me having to cancel them all. I think I'm leaning more to PPC at the moment. I'll probably try a few, or maybe pop into a supermarket and have a quick look before I set a sub up.

Something a bit different - get yourself a subscription to US magazine Road & Track. I've just renewed my subscription at $55 for 2 years, mailed to UK. Yes, that's just £1.50 a copy, delivered!! Excellent magazine IMO.

You can get a flavor here on the link,

Or you could even get it for under a tenner a year if you like Tablets/PCs for reading on.

I have a subscription for Motor Trend and dropped the hardcopy when they jacked the postage some years ago (It used to be REALLY cheap) and now I get Automobile and MT for less money than I paid for MT alone and read it on my tablet and PCs...

Not for everyone I guess, but really cheap! biggrin

In the UK I subscribe to Classic and Sportscar (have done for over 15 years.

Sure, lots of the cars are unobtainable, but that's part of the appeal of reading about them for me.

I must admit I find some of the writers a bit grating these days as they tend to say the same things month in month out, but the cars are often spectacular.

Octane is great but really aspirational.

There target readership seems to be modelled on Nick Mason!

Had a quick flick through two of the mags when shopping on the way home tonight. One was Practical Performance Car, and the other Was Practical Classics, both seemed right up my street. I've decided to buy six issues for £9.95 of one, and subscribe to the other smile

I have really enjoyed recent editions of Octane
