Hi, I have 3 x 225/40R18 and 1 x 235/40R18.
Would this fail an MOT?
Just noticed this and MOT is due in couple of weeks, must have been like that since I got a new tyre 6 months ago.
Cheers

yes.

To caveat, after the daft garage put the wrong tyre on a previous car it failed the MOT.. Soon resolved though.

Could be an advisory, best ask the M.O.T guys first before booking the car in.

Depends on the tester. Some are quite militant. Others are too busy looking for cuts/bulges to care.

Tyres on the same axle must be of the same size and structure, so will probably fail unless the tester misses it.

I'd put money on the tester no noticing it!

What about putting the spare on, not having a spare is not a fail from my memory ?

I had a different size tyre on my car when I bought it and it had an MOT about a week prior to that. The tester didn't fail the car neither did he put it as an advisrory.

Thanks for your comments,
It was annoying me so I went to the garage where I got the tyre originally and asked him about it.
He said it would fail and he put a decent part-worn on FOC.

Cheers.

No guarantee that the odd size tyre was on there at the time of test - wheel swaps to get a pass are very common indeed.

Quite apart from the fact that odd sizes are a fail - and I certainly wouldn't put money on the tester not noticing if it's a proper test* - the different sizes are bad for handling and for mechanical wear. Especially if the mis-match is on the driven axle, in which case your diff will think you're permanently going round corners!

  • as opposed to "I know a guy who passes anything and the test is only a tax anyway, stuff the safety aspect" type.
