Time to put on some on some new leads and a coil. What is the best of each, coil and leads. Been told not to go with Magnacore leads as RV8's don't like them. Is my coil balast resistedconfused
Thanks

Standard "lucas" rover v8 leads, about £30 a set. At this price you can change them quite frequently if they start to break down with heat etc.
Would also consider changing the plug extenders at the same time, again about £30 a set.

How odd. The two weak points on these engines are the leads and the distributors. It is a surprising relief to swap in better components for them.

I have used Magnecors for many years. Never a problem However, the secondary market pushes Magnecor reds and blues. Don't bother. Even Magnecore will tell you that the spark quality is identical unless you are a lover of wild engines and drag racing. I use blacks..if there is a choice.

The happiest swap for the engine is the distributor. Oscilloscopes show a weak spark from the Rover units at best and better ignition wires won't change that much. A Mallory Unilite is a joy.

You are being hard on the Lucas system, its very finely balanced to maintain the spark at a reasonable level. Its all a matter of how long you allow the coil to charge for,(the dwell angle) versus how long you let the spark burn for, before you start charging the coil again, as with 4 sparks per revolution at say 5500 rpm you only have milliseconds for each charge / discharge period. The Lucas magnetic trigger design and ignition amp and coil is designed to keep the HT high enough to keep a reliable spark even at higher RPM, but its all tweaked to work together, so don't go changing the coil for a generic ballasted one, get the correct unit. The Mallory unit wont overcome the basic problem of lack of dwell, any more than the Lucas can, so I doubt there's much to be gained spark wise.

Search for Matt Lewis Racing on eBay.

I got a set of their 8mm Red Silicone leads.

Very reasonable and tidy up the engine bay a treat.
