Power Steering Belt Help!
Discussion
Today I had a go at removing the power steering belt and had to abandon the project. There are three large 14mm bolts behind the pulley which I loosened off, and there are also four 10mm bolts holding the resevoir onto the large bracket also bebind the pulley which I also lossened off. Still the pulley refuses to shift. Or, am I supposed to be undoing the three large 14mm bolts holding the heavy metal bracket onto the cylinder head side and the small 10mm bolt from the rear of bracket onto the water pump?
This is the rover type power steering reservoir mounted up high. Any advice from someone who has tackled this job before would be very welcome. I intend to tackle the job again another day. In the meantime I've tightened everything back up. I am desparate for suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Adam.
I will try and take some pictures tomorrow and post them here and see what you make of it. I just can't see how its going to slide without taking all tha bolts out, and if I do that it will be a problem putting back without a slide mechanism. Thanks for the replies guys.
Tony.

OK. Job done. I had another go today and this time I succeeded. I would like to thank Wedg1e for the information about cracking the three bolts open. Also in a previous question you stated that the top bolt is actually the pivot and the other two are the clamps. This info was very helpful. Wedg1e you know your wedges!
As for getting the correct belts on a Sunday was a little harder. I needed both the p.steering and the alternator belts and most places were shut, so I went to Halfords. There it was a matter of pick and mix. I took my old belts in and compared them to the ones on display. I found almost a perfect match for the alternator but the steering belt was much harder to match. In the end I managed to find one slightly smaller. Both belts went on fine but the power steering one was a little too tight. In fact it didn't even need adjusting. Soon as it went on the belt already seemed tight. I just hope it doesn't damage the water pump or the power steering reservoir bearings. Under the circumstances I had no choice but to fit it. However it seems to be running fine and new belts tend to wear in and stretch a little with use, so it should be ok. Thanks for all your help, and Adam thanks for offering to advise me on the photos. Overall a great result.

just out of interest what size was the belt you got as i'm trying to find a common size for the power steering belt at the moment.
Hi. Jonny Weggie.
I bought both belts from Halfords and obviously they are halfords own make and number. I have the receipt for the belts here with me and the numbers are as follows.
Alternator belt HB1125A £4.09
Power steering HB837A £3.59
It could be the other way round because I have taken them out of the packet and fitted them but from memory I believe it is correct way round. Also if you go to Halfords and find these belts you will see that the there is a big diffrance in the two sizes. The power steering belt being the much smaller.
I must stress that though the alternator belt was almost identical in size, the power steerong belt went on a bit tight as it was a fraction smaller, but having said that it went on without much difficulty. I just did'nt have to adjust it at all as it was already tight. That is why at first I was a little worried incase it was too tight, but I think that after a little use it will wear in and perhaps even need adjusting. In any case it has done the job. I hope this information helps.
