Back again.Fitted a new throttle cable which was a bit of a job to say the least.worth doing because it is so different from before.
Now finding the tickover is a bit up and down.Have cleaned the stepper motor and plenum when I first got the car
a month ago because it was doing it then.seemed to cure it at the time.
Dont know if any of you guys have suggestions I could try before taking it to a garage.

Hi Trevor - Cleaning the stepper is only a part of the process as you also need to clean the inside of the hole that the stepper screws into - and as I recently found out the hole not only has the expected aperture straight ahead (that the pointy bit of the stepper fits against) but also one at one side that also needs to be cleaned. I wasn't aware of the side one until recently and cleaning that seems to have made a difference to tickover in that it is now where it should be and steady as well.

Excellent article on the stepper and its thorough cleaning on RV8R website. Mine now ticks over steady 900rpm after a squirt of WD40 on the nose. Done this twice now. Will use an electric cleaner lubricant spray next time. Yes clean both holes in plenum housing.

The WD40 sounds interesting Eddie. I've just looked at the RV8R bit on cleaning and note the trick of getting the shaft out of the unit; I'm not too keen on trying this as no real problems (hope that's not famous last words ...) but the bit about lubricating the shaft is interesting so I assume that's where the WD40 comes in?

Yes I have not as yet done the whole taking apart since my stepper is behaving itself at the moment. Will lubricate and next try a service with Servisol super 10. Its an electrical contact cleaner and lubricant. WD40 will eventually dry up with the heat. Halfords also have an electric contact cleaner.
