Diesel wafter for 7k
Discussion
As airline prices have gone up it's looking more and more likely I'll soon be driving and not flying from Germany to the UK. Plan is to get a car for this journey...
So onto the journey, there's minimal steering, and only minor gearchanges involved. So handling and driver involvement doesn't matter,
It needs to be comfortable, I'll be sat in it for seven hours. This means comfy seats, and a ride that can cope with Belgian pot holes.
Yes it does need to be diesel. I buy fuel in Luxembourg, and derv is significantly cheaper.
Some performance would also be good, I'm also often on the unrestricted autobahns.
Lastly, it needs to be reliable. I don't want to be stranded in the Eifel mountains in a snow storm.
So, in summary, comfortable reliable diesel. Badge, image or handling isn't important. I have access to other cars for 'fun'.
First to go are VAG cars, tried the Passat and A4, find them too hard. Same for BMW. Vectra is out too, though I liked the Insignia it's out my budget.
Was thinking of a mk4 Mondeo, but tried one today and it gave me a pain in my lower back. Before anyone suggests a Volvo S60, my colleague has one and this very journey in one gave me back pains, despite varied attempts at seat adjustment.
I'm yet to try a Mazda 6, anything else I should be considering?
ETA: No bigger than say a 5 series, it has to fit in my underground parking space.

E-Class Merc, they were made for this sort of journey
Bang on. I bought a 2005 E-Class E270 CDI for commuting from Kent to Newcastle. 700 miles to a tank, quick when it needed to be (highest speed according to satnav was 141*), and supremely comfy.V reliable, but replace front springs as preventative maintenance.
- - at 3am, with no traffic, on a dry road, in a straight line.

This. Astonishingly good cars, especially when you consider how awful the early S-types were.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
