Hi all,
I have recently bought a 525ix touring as a winter shed, I am planning to pick it up on Thursday.
I don't really intend to use it right away as I have a 318i touring that I would like to sell first before putting the 5 on the road.
Its quite a distance away from me and I was going to get some temporary insurance to drive it home and run about with it for a week or two to make sure everything is ok with it.
I thought I would be able to get cheap enough temporary cover for it but after having a quick look the cheapest I can see is around £150 for 14 days.
That seems a bit excessive to me.
Any ideas?
Cheers.

Mr Dave

RLF insurance tends to be the cheapest and easiest to arrange in my experience.

HPI it, you'll get seven days free insurance.

Do you have a policy for the 318? If so, have you checked with that insurance company. My insurer (Bell) charged me just over £14 for 7 day cover on a second car recently which I thought was a good deal.

The company that insures the 318 (SWMBOs runabout so she insures it) won't insure the ix unfortunatly.

Good tip about the HPI check, although I was looking to insure it for a couple of weeks.

ETA, my M5 is insured with Swiftcover and they won't do me temp insurance on the ix. Very odd!
I only tried online though, I didn't call them.

Just did, £192.69 for 14 days. WTF!

Thats a third of what I am to insure my M5 for a year!
I'm 31, 6 years NCD with no points (will have to check though, might still have a fixed penalty on)
I might try Adrian Flux but I changed from them recently as their prices went up dramatically.

That sounds pretty good, do you have to do it the same day the policy starts or can you choose the start date?

You HPI it, they give you a code for Aviva, you call Aviva at your leisure, you give them all your details, they give you a silly quote for a year and you choose a start date for your free seven days.

I tried this when I bought my Defender, its for cars less than 10 years old. You are best to take out a policy with a new insurer using your current ncb on your current policy. You have 2 weeks to cancel the policy, and they won't require proof of ncb unless you claim in this time.

Some insurers give a full refund within 2 weeks, some make an admin charge.

Dayinsure used to be £10 a day. Cover like this always gets dearer and harder to get...
