Hey folks,

I've been playing an electric guitar (telecaster) for about a year, but find that I rarely bother to plug into the amp and am quite content to play rhythm based stuff much of the time.

I've therefore decided to buy an acoustic with a budget of around £250. I don't want a full bodied guitar, so I'm looking at the smaller folk/superfolk style with single cutaway.

I was pretty much sold on a Yamaha APX 500. Although it does play quite nicely it seems quite a lot of money for a guitar that, I've now discovered, has a laminate top. I also played a Tanglewood (with solid Spruce top) that seemed very nice but I'm struggling to find much info/reviews for it. I've attached details of the front running choices below and would be very interested to hear the thoughts of more experienced guitar players.

Many thanks for any help / thoughts.

Fender and Tanglewood both make great acoustics. I don't know the specific model of my Fender but it has a single cutaway, is electro-acoustic and cost around £250. Very satisfied, play it every day.

I would say, if you've played a few different ones, buy the one that plays better / sounds better

I've had a AXP for ~ 10 years and it's been fantastic, however, as a lefty I didn't have a huge choice smile

Go into a good local shop, and have a play on a few. They will more than likely leave you to make your mind up, not caring how good you are or not, and be very helpful if you ask for advice.

Thanks guys,

I did play quite a few guitars in a couple of shops on the weekend, including the two I've posted about. Only problem is that the two I'm drawn to were in different shops, so difficult to get a quick direct comparison. Also, although it sounds strange, I'm not 100% sure I trust my ears and was seeking the thoughts of anyone with knowledge / experience of the guitars I've referred to.
