I'm still in the process of deciding which car to buy (although the Z4M Coupe is waaaaay out in front). The latest thing to cross my mind is that I'll be using this as my only vehicle and it needs to get me home (Edinburgh) and back (to Essex) over the winter period. That's quite a daunting task if last year is anything to go by.

So, I was looking at getting a cheap set of wheels with winter tyres, but the problem I'm having is knowing which wheels will fit an M and which wont. Can anyone help out? I'm guessing it's an offset issue, rather than PCD.

My other option is to get my M, buy some CSLs and then stick winter tyres on the OEMs but that would be pretty much £2k to do...so I was trying to think of a more reasonable alternative.

The E46 M3 really needs wider rear wheels and tyres, the rear wheels are also a lower offset than the fronts IIRC.

You could buy something like replica CSL wheels if you can find them but they will likely be 19", very heavy and almost impossible to get a spare wheel if you bend one. I would suggest buying a set of 2nd hand genuine 18" wheels and get suitable tyres.

Get some genuine 18" M3 alloys if you get the M3, they're cheap as chips on ebay normally. Not sure what fits the Z4M.

I agree with the guys above.

Second hand OEM 18" wheels were by far the cheapest option when I wanted a set of track wheels. There are normally plenty on ebay. Getting cheap normal aftermarket wheels with the correct widths and offsets front and rear is not easy. (Unless you get replica CSL wheels, but as they 19", winter tyres are much more expensive)

Incidentally:

A lot of people seem to think the replica CSL wheels weigh a tonne. I've got them on my car, and they weigh almost exactly halfway between standard M3 19" wheels and genuine CSL wheels.

Some do, some don't. The last set I picked up my 1st thoughts were exceptionally heavy (and I have handled alot of different alloys wink )

Yeah, sorry. I meant some people think that ALL replicas are really heavy. They don't realise that you can get some replicas that are relatively light.

How much did you guys pay for your OEM M3s? The prices seem all over the place on eBay. Is getting them for £200 a reasonable expectation?

I got some refurbed OEM rims from http://www.bmautosport.co.uk/ when sorting winter wheels and tyres early this year. High quality refurb, good price and great service too; you should be able to knock a reasonable amount off the price on the website if you just buy the wheels, without the summer rubber.

I've got a set of Genuine 19's from my E46 which I will be looking to offload in the next week or so. Nothing pretty to look at but would make an ideal set for winter use. All tested and are straight and free from buckles etc.

edit - just re-read and you'll already have the OEMS so no worries.

That's a good suggestion but the 19" means going for larger winter tyres, which cost considerably more...so unless you can offer me the mother-of-all low prices, I'm afraid it's not what I'm looking for smile

I had a look on their site and they don't have any OEMs in 18" but they do have some pretty good looking CSL replicas. I emailed them but they said eBay would be my best bet.

I'd say £200 is a pretty achievable price. I was thinking of doing the same when I had my M3 and that was the sort of price I was finding them for. Take a look on a few owners forums, they tend to turn up quite regularly.
