Righto, I'm hopefully going to have £1k to spend on a cheap to run, but fun car, and I've narrowed it down to the Puma 1.7 or 106 / Saxo.

From what I gather, the Puma would be more reliable, cheaper to fix, have a better gearchange, be more comfortable... the Saxo / 106 will be faster, more exciting, drink less fuel, less rusty... I suppose when you write it like that I've almost answered my own question hehe but the Puma does get a 5-star rating in Evo so maybe the decision is harder than I think.

So what thinks PH?

I've also considered a Phase 1 172 but I've already had a 182.

Sounds daft but I'm kind of looking forward to getting a FWD car again after the RWD cars I've had as you can just take them by the scruff of the neck and really throw them around... no doubt I'll get burned at the stake for saying that! biggrin

Saxo VTS - namely this one;

leggy but low on owners and unabused, it's the one I'd have if I were buying (a friend of mine is the seller)

This, from what you have mentioned.

However a 306 Gti-6 (or Rallye) would be preferable - nice interior, 6th gear for cruising, looks cleaner and more modern, a terrible turning circle and suspect electrics would be the downside.

gti/vts, I drove my mates he recently picked up for £800 and they are still as fun to drive as I remember! Try and get a non-sunroof one if possible too (106 only)

106 or saxo

I'd disagree about the french cars being more expensive to fix i'd say they're about even.

PUMA!

They really are as much fun as people say, and they're quick enough. Rust will be an issue but generally its just cosmetic so if it is rusting and you can put up with it, it's okay. Plus a decent one will be cheaper than a decent (un chaved) 106/saxo.

Those 2 VTSs look well smart. Have to sell my current car first though (anyone wanna buy an MR2 Turbo biggrin)

It does seem as though you have more chance of getting a good VTS for the money than a GTI, shame really as I generally prefer the GTI, just looks a little classsier to my eyes.

Well, I've decided, and I am going for.................................. neither hehe

I think I am going to go for another MX5. I have found that it is by far, the cheapest to insure of the 3 cars, and it has RWD, bullet proof reliability and is a convertible, which I do miss!

But I really want a 115 bhp 1.6 for the lightness, and the revviness and the noise of the engine, all 3 of which are better than the 1.8 even if it is *slightly* slower.

Just need to shift the MR2...........
