There I was cruising at 77 on the inside lane on the m'way in the Maser. Saw a slower vehicle in front checked mirrors and saw another car in lane 2 closing slowly. Indicated and checked mirrors and the car in lane 2 speeds up. Obviously can't pass me in time to allow me to overtake behind him so he's starting to box me in. Choice for me: brake or accelerate. With a Maser it's easy to accelerate so I speed up and move into lane 2. What is he thinking: Did he see a Maser and think ooh I'll overtake (at 78-80) or did he think I'll box the flash car in? He recedes in the rear view and I finish my overtake and drop back to lane 1 at 77 again. Perhaps predictably I do not see him take lane 1 like me nor does he creep up again. Thing is, this is not an isolated incident, many times when trying to "merge like a zip" I see people trying to close the gap to stop me. Is this common experience?

I find a whole list of piss boiling antics going on which bare little relation to what is right and wrong in the law, highway code or what is safe. But just stupid egos feeling like someone is beating them or getting one over on them.
It can be worse in a performance/luxury car, but equally if you drive a banger, some people can't stand the thought of something cheaper and lesser than their motor possibly going before them.
My strategy is just to block it out and do my best not to respond in anyway. Unfortunately you cannot stop muppets being muppets, beeping horns, flashing lights as some people do, will not educate them only cause aggravation and help raise your own blood pressure. Whilst they'll continue righteously being a muppet.
Just have to take a deep breath and hope at some point they do it in front of an unmarked traffic cop.

Won't make any difference - it's not illegal, just anti-social.OP - just try and plan a little further ahead. I now keep an eye on my mirror a lot when in the inside lane.
In the M3, if I see a closing gap, it's just a case of -flipflipflip- and a bootful (SMG) to get clear of whatever's about to block me in. Most of the time the speed I've built up is enough to "coast" on to swiftly overtake whatever was in front of me and return to the lane before the car behind has figured out what just happened.
In the Mini, however, I have to plan my overtakes, and any loss of speed takes a lot longer to regain. If I spot a middle lane hogger coming up behind me when I'm approaching a truck or slow vehicle, I sometimes pull out a bit early (that's what she said) to ensure I don't get boxed in. On my way home today two cars decided to sit on my rear quarter to make sure I couldn't pull out until I was at 56mph, whereby they both sped off. In one case, I came across the car again, sitting in the middle lane behind two lorries overtaking each other. After overtaking all of them, I was again in the middle lane overtaking a truck. Said car came roaring up behind me, sitting a few inches off my bumper. I carried on taking my time with the overtake, with a completely free outside lane. Eventually when I pulled in, the car sped off in search of someone else to tailgate.

I had this from a marked police car, though he did actually block me in. Can only imagine he was checking my (or the car in front's) registration. He then proceeded to drive down the outside lane for the rest of the M8 so maybe he was just a dick.OP, perhaps your own driving subconciously sends a message to others that you're easy to, or want to be, mugged off. Your posts suggest it, using terms like "box the flash car in".
It sounds as though your driving has been the real issue here, as you've failed to plan ahead sufficiently to make progress without impeding the driver to your right. If he is gaining speed and you're stuck where you are because you failed to plan ahead, thats your fault and not his and he doesn't have to yield to you. So often, tales of woe and stupidity are spun here with posters looking for others to state they were in the right, rarely giving their own actions any thought or telling the other side of the story.

If he is gaining speed and you're stuck where you are because you failed to plan ahead, thats your fault and not his and he doesn't have to yield to you. I'm a believer that you shouldn't need to use indicators on the motorway. You're always going to return to the left at some point, so it shouldn't be a surprise when you move that way after an overtake
When moving right, there's usually enough clues going on to suggest to other drivers that you might want to be moving out in front of them. Always see it coming, e.g. a lorry pulls out for an overtake. Guess what, some, not all of the cars in that lane are going to want to go to L3. Sometimes it's nice to second guess that one if you're the lead car by moving in advance to an empty L3 to create space for the lorry and see who follows before they need to indicate
