Pre 18 cars
98` Punto Sporting 1.2
Fiesta Ghia X 1.4
Rover 216 Tomcat 1.6

2006 (18)1999 Alfa Romeo 156 1.8TS. (Cost £1450) sold for (£1250) Did 20,000 miles. First proper car, had it fot 18 months, loved it, very reliable too. Sold it for £200 less than I paid for it, with 20,000 + miles smile

(19)2002 Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0TS. (cost £3000) sold for (£2700). Did 6,000 miles. I thought I had the alfa bug, worst car ever, the most unreliable piece of junk I have ever had the pleasure of owning, had to have a new engine, lost about £1700 in 2 months, not good for an 19 year old student, that hurt, luckily I was making enough from buying and selling cars, you would have thought I`d have known better.

BUT WHAT A STUNNER!!!!!!

2008 (20)2000 BMW 530d (cost £3000) sold for (£2850) Did 12,000 miles. Bought this from my step dad, when he had a company car, it was remapped. I once averaged 60mpg going 60mph from Newport to London

2009 (20)2000 AUDI TT 225 Quattro. (cost £5000) sold for (£5500) Did 11,000 miles. Loved this car, Paid £300 for the TT V6 Alloys with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres with 7mm+ smile made it look much better IMO. Gutted when I sold it, but moved to London and it was attracting too much attention in the car park

2009 (21)2001 BMW 325i SE (cost £2750) sold for (£2950) Did 2,000 miles. This came up cheap, 77k, pile of junk, bad purchase.... btw I did NOT make a profit I broke even at the very best

2010 (22)2003 Vauxhall Signum 2.2 DTI (cost £2200) sold for (£2250) Did 14,000 miles. Needed a reliable, large, economic estate for work.... frown

2010 (22)Renault Clio 182 Full Fat (cost £3050) sold for (£2700)Did 11,000 miles. No longer need those things, loved this car, it defies physics , great car!!!

2011 (22-24) BMW 330ci Sport Auto, (cost £3300), did 25k in it. Full BMW history, bought it from a retired chap, who bought a brand new 330i M Sport. Front end & wings were resprayed due to rust and stone chips. It is absolutely mint, doesn't have a single scratch or dent. I loved this car, sold it for £2k to a friend.

I think what I have learned from these sorts of cars is, always buy on condition, mileage means sweet F -all. This 330ci was in way better condition than the 325 and it has double the mileage.

Something else I have learned, diesel isnt always the answer to motorists on a budget, the extra purchase price, the extra risks of something going (injectors, fuel pump, turbo) will wipe out in an instant plus more, any saving you have or will made. Admittedly I am contracting myself because both of my diesels were superb and didn't have any problems, but seeing my skint mates with "diesel trouble" always scared me. (Clearly don't follow my own advice there)

Jan /13 to 03/13. 2004 330d m-sport 204 touring manua l. Mileage increased to 25k, and prefer a touring to the salon.Had to bite the bullet and buy a more economical car, Spent £2000 on it in two months. It was scruffy, the photo does it justice. It was a cat c too. It had to go, so lost £1000 in two months (still I did 7000 miles in it)

March 13 - current 2003 330d M-Sport 204 touring manual
Loved the idea, so bought another, this one is absolutely mint. Not a single scratch, previous owner of 8 years and kept in ht garage so no rust. This one is not remapped and the difference is huge. But at 120k mapping is not an option.

November 13 - 645ci

September 2014 TT 3.2 S-Tronic
Pro Sat Nav, Xenon plus, mag ride, S-Tronic, extended leather, cruise control, BOSE, multi-functional steering wheel, parking sensors, folding mirrors, electric seats etc. Had the S-tronic & haldex oil & filter changed, along with a full service, warranty, new MOT, and new goodyear tyres as part of the deal

April 2016 - 640d, did 50k I’m it, did realise how much I love a petrol engine until the X3 arrived.

Oct 2018 X3 M40i

Which recently was stolen fancied by the the wife....luckily the Disco Commercial arrived recently - still current 2023

Decided to take the plunge with an i8 as a bit of a toy. Did a “hoovies”, cheapest one in the country. Still it has a three year warranty from Sytner and just had a brand new engine & turbo fitted by BMW.

F Pace 5.0, RWD had it for a very short period I didn’t get on with it. Great noise but it would spin the rear tyres too easily, sold Summer 2022. Bought as an approved car, lost £500.

Bought from Mercedes as an approved used car with 2-year warranty. What a beast, much quicker than the F Type, different league of car in my opinion. Still current

Thanks for sharing op have to agree with you about the diesels one problem and it could wipe out any saving you were going to make.

Cheers for that mate, how was the 216 on insurance while you were 17? I'm currently sharing the old mans merc' and want something of my own, these seem a strong contender!

The pre-facelift 156 in Alfa Red is about as pretty as four saloons will ever get.

I think I might have been 18 when I had the tomcat, from memory it was about £650+ but that was 5/6 years ago, insurance has gone up a lot since then! Saying that the renewal for my 330 came in at £580 at 23 not top bad, but paid £1100 this year frown

Cheers, apart from the Signum -did a Job and did it well - but by no means a great car

I think the TT has been my most loved, as it did feel pretty special at 20, and the women seemed to like it smile

And me cost absolutely nothing whatsoever in the time I owned it

Haha, agreed smile

Like I said though, it was only for 6 months, it didnt cost me a penny the entire time I had it, not even tax. It was a good load lugger though, the seats fold completely flat, good for getting the bikes in.

In a way I quite liked having a car that I didnt really care about, just used to put diesel in and check the oil.

Looking at photos of my clio makes me miss it a bit, it was in such good condition, even on 110k, it had, full Renault history, owned by head mechanic at Renault dealership, it had all the belts done, fully serviced, new tyres, shocks, discs & pads all replaced before I bought it.

I had the steering wheel re-trimmed as the old when had literally melted, £125 I think, well worth it too, the quality was second to none
