help! disco 3 just done a tank slapper at 70mph!!
Discussion
just drove my 2005 65k mileage disco 3 the 410 miles from glasgow to Dorset - on motorway 300 miles into journey car threw what can only be described as a mad "tank slapper" - mad weave taking me across 2 lanes - damn near keeched myself it was that scary! dropped speed down to 40mph but felt like i was driving a jelly. stopped and checked car over but no signs of anything obvious. continued on to destination but crawled rest of way at 40mph. once at our destination, dropped it into local garage but they couldnt find anything wrong, bushes showed no excessive play, bearings and wishbones etc seemed fine. Had no option but to risk the drive back next day. took me 10 hours to do 400 miles but strangley as we covered more miles car seemed to get better and we were able to eventually cruise at 65mph with the weave gone.
anyone experienced this or any ideas?
could it be gas suspension is gubbed
is this likely to cost a small mortgage to fix?
not sure if i should pay the massive hourly rates and put it into a proper landrover garage as i have no confidence in the cars handling now or risk putting it into a local garage and run the risk of it not being diagnosed properly so not fixed fully?
any ideas would be greatfully welcomed!
thanks guys

sounds like the air suspension went awol.
does it still raise/lower on the off road hight selector? low/med/high
I would get it diagnosed by a LR dealer then quote for the fix. Must have been very scary.
We have a D3 and ferry the kids around so I would be interested to hear the results.

Get it into your main dealer and see if you talk to the service manager or even the technician who is going to do the work to make sure they know what the problem is.
You might also want to pop a note onto the Disco3 forum to see if anyone there has experienced a similar problem.

yep, first thing i tried was lowering and re-raising the suspension which it did no problem but the bad weave is still there. Think i'll take it to main dealership to at least see if they can diagnose the problem - i'll post up a note tomorrow once ive been to dealership, they are closed today - scottish (glasgow) holiday up here today!

What dealer? I visit the one in maryhill, it gets a good name.s
Have you had any work done to the tracking, bushes, ball joints etc?
going to take it to taggarts maryhill on tuesday - closest place to my work. garage i took it to in dorset couldnt find anything obviously wrong with bushes etc but in fairness to them they only had a few hours hours to look at it before they closed for the weekend and i had to take car away and drive back to glasgow - will see what taggarts can find wrong with it. Need something fixed on it as no way am i taking it up to 70 on motorway again until i know its not going to go lane surfing like that again.
yep, will go down to Taggarts today and book it in - its definitely nothing obvious as both myself and local garage have both had a look but local garage felt this was out of their depth in the time I could give them before having to return to glasgow and that it should be looked at by a proper 4x4 specialist. They described my car as 'simply horrible to drive' - gut feeling is that its suspension related - that perhaps theres a serious in-balance causing the car to weave and chop about at speed.
At its worst moment at 70+ mph on the M6 it genuinely felt as though a wheel was coming off
its not going back on the motorway until fixed!

Suspension sounds odd. Maybe it could do something to cause an event but as the weave is ongoing wouldn't this imply an imbalance which could be seen or diagnosed relatively easily?
In the old days before gadgets and clever stuff that kind of description would tend to suggest that a wheel had been curbed or similar and that the angles where out.
With a 4x4 is it actually possible that a diff is putting more power to one wheel?
But if it suddenly appeared and is now slowly getting better doesn't that sound more like a gadget issue than a mechanical one?

just dropped it into taggarts this morning so will wait and see what they say is the problem
saw the new evoque for the first time in the flesh- i think its stunning. Not sure its a real range rover but it looks fantastic! way outta my price though - would need to sell the tvr and and the landy to get one and that aint gonna happen!

possible steering angle sensor out of calibration? u can be going straight but the car thinks the steering is slightly turned and cause all sorts of braking/steering issues, including veering to the side at speed.. An air suspension fault bad enough to make the car go off course would almost certainly bring the fault light on... did the dealer report back to you yet?
