Hey guys/girls

A need some help if possible

My father in law and I had two motorbikes stolen from our back garden at the begining of September (A Honda CRM250 and XR400)

Ive just had a phone call from Hampshire police. They have been contacted by interpol, and our bikes (Yes both of them) have been recovered by Bucharest Police in Romania.

Now as we havent claimed for the bikes on our insurance, so recovering them via the insurance is not an option.

My question is, does anyone here work for a Continental Haulage company that i could explore the option of putting them on a HGV to get them back?

Cheers

Nick

Cheap flight over and adventure weekend riding them home would be my first choice.

May as well make the best of a bad situation.

Don't know but to go out there with a trailer fetch them could be an interesting trip
although the costs may be prohibitive fuel tolls ferry etc

I have a suitable motor and trailer but a quick fag packet calculation
reckons about £1000 to cover the above.

ETA im sure a haulage firm could do it for less but finding one could be difficult.

Yeah. A road trip would be epic, but i think the costs could be astronomical, as would the damage to my body (both bikes are road registered Enduro off roaders with knobblies on). Both bikes do about 100 miles to a tank (about £15 to fill) and its circa 1600 miles one way, Never mind ferry and tolls costs. I have to bare in mind, both bikes are worth about £1300 each (well, prior to being stolen. Im yet to receive news in what state they are in. However, as they have been recovered together, I assume they were probably still on a lorry) so IF i am to recover them, i need to make it as cheap as poss to make it feesable (sp)

Ive put something on Shiply, which is basically a site where i say what i want picking up and from where, and businesses bid for my job, but not holding out too much hope

Transit van hire for 3/4 days, credit card and loads of red bull should do it.

Its about 3200 miles round trip. van hire £250, £500 fuel, £100 chunnel, campsites £50, food + drink £100.

As above approx. £1000.

What are the bike worth?

Oops - just seen your post above.

Yeah I am aware of that, but shouldn't the thieves have to pay as part of the justice? Surely if every time they were caught and have to pay to ship them, surely that would not make it such a lucrative business.

But a road trip would be great, your paying someone to get them back, so you may as well do it yourself and have a load of fun.

for those wondering, there are couple of key reasons as to why we are not going through our insurance company

1) they were insured third party only
1a) The reasons for this are due to financial repercussions of claiming. I own 2 other motor bikes and a performance car. My father in law owns another bike, and performance car and a van. If we claimed for these bikes, we would have to declare that claim for the next five years on every one of those policies. the increase in price on our policies over the 5 years would easily excel that of the value of the bikes.

2) the likely hood of return. Due to the relatively low value of the bikes, it is highly unlikely that the insurance company would pay for them to be returned, as the cost of transport wouldnt be far off the value of the bikes (knowing full well companies bump up their prices when they deal with insurance companies). Futhermore, the likelyhood is that if we had claimed, we would have been paid out by now. This would then make the insurance companies the owners of the recovered bikes, and we wouldnt get them back any case.

What are the bikes worth over there?

How much would it cost you to fly over, sell them to a local dealer and fly back with the cash in pocket?

If someone has bothered to take them all the way there from the UK, they must be worth something, possibly more than over here!

Certainly, in my experience, a £2500 bike is worth another £500 in Czech Republic where my wife comes from; I have already taken three bikes over for different people.
