E39 M5 Big Grin Today... The sound i've always wanted!!
Discussion
Only the other week i was sitting looking through the pistonheads / autotrader classifieds thinking i fancy a change to my M5 after owning it for 2 years i was getting the itch to get something new. At 200k on the clock what i'd get for it would be minimal so with that in mind i decided to put right everything i've wanted to do since i bought it. The last thing i needed to get out of my system was the sound of the car, it never really did it for me, that was until today when i arrived at Nuneaton Custom Chrome! I had booked the car in to have the "mufflers deleted" as i knew this was a popular modification for E39 M5. I wanted the pipes to look standard as i could get with the same staggered configuration. All i can say is this is the best thing for the price you could possibly do to an e39 M5 if you haven't already done it or got some kind of system other than standard one. The sound is amazing and is totally addictive, i've spent most of the day driving round because i just love the way it sounds. I've had a massive grin all day even though i've spent nearly £70 in fuel just letting the car out down some country lanes. If you've ever driven a TVR Griffith 500 then this is what i'd compare the sound to, its a proper v8 sound and doesn't sound "chavvy" in any way. I had the pipes made so that the stock silencers can go back in at any time, maybe come sale time. But i can honestly say that i don't think anyone would want the old "stock" sound back. I highly recommend doing this and also highly recommend Custom Chrome in Nuneaton too Graham and Matt did a really nice job and were also nice blokes. £250 all in and probably the best £250 i think i'll spend on the car!!

They were really good, stayed watching them do it the whole time and they were constantly asking " is this okay, does that look right, you happy with that". I couldn't be happier with it and as i'm writing this i'm looking at the keys and thinking could i be bothered going for another quick run?! I'm looking for excuses to use the car now again, hold on, i think i've run out of bread...
I would put a clip up on youtube but i really don't think they do the sound justice. It's a lot throatier in real life and after watching all the clips i could find i decided to do it. Trust me if you like what you hear in the videos then you'll not be disappointed. It sounds a lot more refined and classy as i think with the distortion and people using camera phones the quality isn't all there to show it off. The guys at custom chrome said they'd also put a couple of small back boxes in if i didn't like the sound, effectively you've got the Hayward & Scott design then. Or when it comes time to sell, £30 to put the old one back in.

OOoooh Bloody hell, I want to do it, then I dont, then I do. But my neighbours 82 years old and such a sweet old girl, If I kill her with 150db of S62 i'll never forgive myself.
Both my neighbours are widows...no complaints so far. It's no louder than stock at low revs.plenty said:

Mine is pretty loud when started from cold but only for a minute or two.My neighbour has commented on it in the past and if I am leaving the house early I roll it down the street so I don't wake my young lad up.

Roll it down the street!! In a carry on style "Sssssssssssssshh! dont tell anyone i'm sneaking out!" Ha ha. Brilliant. My neighbour has commented on it in the past and if I am leaving the house early I roll it down the street so I don't wake my young lad up.

So upshot is, a loud deep rumble at cold start up when the air pumps are on? Which then quietens down just in time for when i've left? I'll have to buy the old dear a bigger bottle of gin to help her sleep.

Off to look up how far Nuneaton is.....
I've had my muffler delete sound tested, and recorded 102db@5000rpm, so it's not that loud, unless your past 7000rpm and happen to be going through a long tunnel.Off to look up how far Nuneaton is.....
I've been mulling this over, it's the early morning cold starts that have me worried about the neighbours getting the hump, but then 2 doors up the road is a Jag diesel which is surprisingly noisy and although it wouldn't be as boomy as the M5 I'll bet it's as loud in decibel terms.
Hmmm...

Loads of clips on Youtube, just search "muffler delete"
I did that and they generally sounded very nice. I'm going to be doing this to my car now. Is there anyone based in the SE (Essex ideally) that has done similar to anyone else's car and comes recommended, otherwise I guess I will be making my way up to Nuneaton at some point.I listened to loads on You Tube but TBH they are rubbish compared to the real thing. If you are unsure try and find someone who has carried it out and ask for a listen.
Mine was really loud when cold but sooo worth it.
Now its gone I have a quiet car and often surprise the wife and kids when I come home because they cant hear me coming anymore
