pre cat disintergrated
Discussion
I have just removed both manifolds on my 4.0 95 chim to fix leaky gaskets, when looking at the pre cats I found the drivers side to have disintergrated ( just the outer ring left )passenger side OK.
as usual what turned out to be a straightforward job has unearthed more problems,
what are the best options.
1 bash out good cat (will this cause a problem with the MOT and will I need a rechip)
2 fit new catted manifold (very expensive)
3 where has all the bits of the old cat gone (blocked exhuast? how do I check/unblock)
what would you do

Just had the pre-cats removed on mine and proceeded to pass the MOT with flying colours hours later so take them out. In fact I would advise it as if they are disintegrating you don't want any exhaust backpressure to take bits back into the engine (on that basis be incredibly thorough to make sure all traces of them are removed). To keep a certain amount of backpressure there are available 'cones' to weld in internally. From what I understand their job is to control emissions whilst the engine is warming up, when the engine is warm the main cat comes into play.
