When I was 18 I had the chance to buy a Daihatsu Storia X4 from a local Mitsubishi dealer - one of 2 brought over from Japan. They were basically a rally Sirion with a turbo and 4wd.

It's would have been ideal for me but I couldn't convince the bank to lend me the money. It's the sort of car that would have kept me interested for many years.

Has anyone else a story of wow buying or not buying a particular car.

My megane F1 £200 + a month on finance. 19 years old, drinking every weekend with the lads without fail + going out with the missus in the week for meals + lads holidays + £1800 a year insurance on £8 an hour.

Put the insurance on credit card, never paid it off. Had to loan the money to pay the finance off and pay the credit card off, sold the car and I only had about half of what I had to borrow due to depreciation. I am still paying for it now and will be the next 4 years?

Looking back, I wish I had not of purchased it. Saying that, the car never wanted for anything and I loved it to bits. Its just the life style I am/was living and that car did not go to well (if planning on having a future).

:/

I was about £200 short of being able to hit Buy It Now on a Mk1 MX-5 RS Limited. It was already silly money, but I had nothing extra in my bank account or credit card, having just spent a lot on my other car and a rental deposit.

The car sat there on ebay, taunting me. I emailed the seller, but he wouldn't accept any less, and even if I had bought it, I couldn't have afforded to bring it home.

Eventually I emailed him, told him what it was really worth, and he sold it via an enthusiast's website.

If only I'd had that cash, I'd probably still be in that car now, and very happy indeed.

Really wish I'd bought a Mini and Capri when they were at scrap prices as opposed to 4 figures for a rough one

306 HDi - It was by no means a bad car, but I wish I had bought the GTi-6 instead! However it lasted a month before someone crashed into the back of it and wrote the car off! I bought a S1 Elise with the insurance payout (and some savings!) smile

A few years back I was looking to buy a 964 RS. Found one I wanted in blue. Made an offer to the owner but we couldn't agree on a price. Difference was only about £1'500 but I walked away. Since then 964 RSs have gone up in value by about £15'000!

Had the chance to buy an Opel Boss as a student, but I was low on funds and cautious of running costs (needn't have been).

When looking for my first car, I drove a CitiGolf CTI (1.8 engine in a mk1 type Golf). Immaculate condition and went like the clappers. Unfortuately Old Lady Pints was certain I'd kill myself in it and, because I needed the go-ahead of the parentals for insurance purposes (this was back in SA, so different regulation back then), she vetoed that.

Turns out the guy who bought the Golf would eventually become related to me (my wife's cousin) and he loved it.

Either car would have been a miles of smiles.

I raced one of those in about 2004 - much better than the 426 it replaced. Great bikes!!

Looked at an import Impreza Type R in black being sold by a Jap importers in Alton back in '99. I had every intention of buying it but was taken aback by the salesmans attitude, along the lines of "you can't afford to buy it OR run it". I wish I'd have bought it, both to piss on the chod's chips and it would have redrawn my automotive map for the better.
