I was just wondering what people tend to do about servicing intervals. I did less than 1500 miles last year so only went for an oil change service, and this year I'll only be doing about 2000 miles. The previous owner was a low milage user and in total my Tiv has done only about 6k miles since it's last 12k service (approx 3500m since it's last 6k service).

I was wondering, do people stick with the 12 month intervals for services, or do people tend to stick to milage as an indication of when to service?

What do other low milage users do?

I alternate every year no matter the milage, 6K service then 12K. Car spends 7-8 months in storage though, I get the car serviced everytime it comes out of storage.

Best bet is to check with whoever does your servicing, unless of course, you DIY. Some indies now offer a low mileage service option, which is lower priced, but still reasonably comprehensive. Any good garage would still check most items and let you know if there was a problem. HTH

For me, I would do it on mileage too and get essential fluids done each year\use common sense. I spent £600 on a 12k miles service one year with the Cerb and I probably hadn't even done 2k that year.- just to keep the service book good.

that was my thoughts, do it on mileage. but how would that impact the resale value (if at all).

You would hope any buyer would understand why you wouldn't just spend silly money just to have the book stamped on a yearly basis. You can usually detect how well a car has been looked after anyway. So long as you can explain the reasoning and show it has had regular oil changes etc I don't see why it should impact on the price but personally I'm not too fussed anyway as mines a keeper. smile

Interesting as mine is a keeper to. I've been in a quandry as to the best and most cost effective way to keep mine. I had only done 2k last year and the 12k service was due. I've only done 7k since the engine was rebuilt in 2008. I had a low mileage service with all fluids checked and those that needed it, changed. No tappet check or adjustment done though. Next year I will expect to have done 2-3k so will probably go for a low mileage 6k service. The following year I will have a full 12k with tappets etc as the car will have done approx 12k since the rebuild.

It was about £650 but I had a driveshaft gaiter replaced and a few switches changed as well as a few other bits.

Sorry to bring up an old thread.. but money is tight and service is looming so thinking of getting a mini service. The only concern is last year I had a mini service as well (although I had only done 1.5k miles, and have only done 2k miles since then).

What are peoples thoughts on doing 2 mini's in a row. It will have only done approx 3.5-4k miles since it's last 12k service, although that was 2 years ago.

Sounds like it is due its 12k service items. Fluids, diff/geabox oil etc. Maybe the 12k service but without the tappet adjustment (assuming it is not needed).

Also remember extras they find during service. No point in scrimping as maintenance needs doing sooner or later, a bit like going to the dentist.

I know these things are not cheap to run.

You should get a 12K done, you shouldn't need to ask!!!.

If you were selling then to me I'd be wandering what else has he tried to save money on. I realise you know your car but a potential buyer may well be suspicious as to why you haven't adhered to the service schedule. I'd also expect a valve check to be done the service following a minor.

Should be a 12k by my reckoning. I would think a potential purchaser would find it acceptable for a mini service to be followed by a FULL 12k but two minis in a row might cause some problems.
However if money is tight then work on the theory that owt's better than nowt

I guess it really depends how much and in what way you use the car and how long you think you will keep it. I intend to keep the car forever, I do not track it, but I do regularly use it for about 5000 miles a year so it is much more miles the you do. However, if I'd do only 1500 a year I would take the same approach.

I let the TVR specialist where my car gets serviced decide what they think is best and needs doing. It might cost a bit more but it gives me peace of mind that the car gets the maintenance that it deserves. Of course I have a chat about the car and what they see before agreeing to what needs to be done, but I am not afraid of getting ripped off by a trustworthy TVR specialist.

When you look at most service schedules, there's lots of 'check this' and 'check that' and the bill goes up cos the checks reveal something needs doing. I think a 12k TVR service does include a fair bit of change, like all fluids, plugs, filters etc. but tappets check/change is still extra.

In my opinion, if you're only doing small mileages it's ok to do mini-service, mini-service, 6k-serviee, mini-service, mini-service, 12k-service.

Just make sure you always have whatever NEEDS doing done !

It's 12 months or 6k. Hence it doesn't matter if you've only driven 500 miles since the last service, it should be serviced after 12 months. The services alternate between 6k and 12k, although I always have the 12k done every year because I want the car as well maintained as possible. That's just me.

Why is your mileage so low ?? I know people have work and other things going on in their lives, but......

Get out and enjoy your car some more, then the service will be easier to justify.

TVR's like to be used.
