Steering wheel movement

Just in case. Yesterday, I felt the steering wheel start to move up and down by half an inch (sorry, a centimetre). Bit disconcerting, it was like the adjustment hadn't engaged properly. I took off the plastic cowel, and noticed a pin (see piccy) was sticking out some way, and as a result, indeed the steering adjuctment was not working properly. I tapped the pin back in (then remembered to take a photo), and all is fine again. I don't think there was a big danger, but if the pin had come out altogether, the steering would have still worked, but the wheel would have floated up and down a lot. Not nice. Worth a couple of minutes to take out the four screws holding the cowel together, and checking the pin is where it should be? Not sure why it would drift, but mine did.

Interesting post !!!
This happened to me mid way through a fast twisty corner last Summer...........When the pin came right out. It frightened the life out of me as the column floated up and down.
Previous owner had put masking tape around it years ago, which had come undone.
I would advise everyone to check this as it could have caused an accident .

Make sure you re-stake it as can be seen on the above piccy otherwise it will just come straight out again this can be done easily with a blunt punch or knackered centre punch
