In the course of my SC500 project there was no shortage of helpful folks who suggested I might destroy my T5 gearbox and the diff with 400ftlbs+.

Had considered the CTS/Quaife option but at around £2k fitted I considered chancing my arm by running the standard.

Chance conversation with Steve Guglielmi led me to Readman Racing/Grantura Engineering - first enquiry was last thursday. The box and diff have both been rebuilt, modified, should be good for 550ftlbs (if treated with respect), all for £600 and ready within 2 working days.

Blimey - couldn't pass that up in the circumstances.

Apologies if I'm behind the curve on this - thought it might be useful to some as when I was looking for gearbox/transmission advice on PH, it was all CTS/Quaife vs Tremec TKO.

Fantastic timing that man - just trying to find a good diff rebuilder, as mine has more lash than a cat-o-nine-tails...

Cheers!

I used Grantura for my oil / water pump rebuild on the Cerb and was very pleased with quality, price and service.

Is yours the same BTR diff as fitted to the Cerbera? If so, how much of the cost was the diff?

strip/check/overhaul/modify/put back together, rather than replacement internals (apart from where necessary)

Same here. I just bought a 98 Chimaera and apart from a few bits to do I want to sort out the diff play.
Thanks,
Tony.

The reason is experience. I've pushed the T5 more than most and it is a lot stronger than many reckon. Sure there are some internal mods that can help but in the end of the day, the limiting factor is the gears.

I ran a "similar" spec done by an unknown source on my Supercharged Wedge with about 475lb/ft torque. It lasted about 9 months before something snapped internally. The CTS/Quaife replacement put up with 550lb/ft and slicks with no problems: it even put up with me snapping the diff mounts.

Fair enough Steve, point taken

To be fair I should've made clearer that mine isn't for racing, although I might drag or track it a couple of times a year with nothing stickier than 888s.

The brief on mine was to reliably handle 450ftlbs on a road car where the box is less likely to be banged about and no clutch dump launches.

had the invoice now, so no one feels misled :

came to £800 + VAT, 60% box, 40% diff - lots of replacement parts overall, more replaced than expected, the box & diff now fully Tuscan racer spec.

ETA - So, a bit more than the £600 estimated, but more work was done..

Excluding dampers ,brakes etc has it worked out more expensive then the LS drive in drive out route ?

I still like the iedea of having the LS3 and stronger gearbox...

nope - like for like (engine & gearbox) it has worked out cheaper by enough to cover driveshafts, rad, wheels, brakes, tyres etc,

the other thing is, not to disrespect Sportmotive, is that there are always extras, because we're working in/around old cars !

430/380 isn't it, for the £14k ? - the 480 is a cost option

and I can achieve 500+bhp for probably less than a grand from the stage I'm at (bigger blower, smaller pulley)

ETA - IF IF IF IF TVRs ever appreciate as a classic (and I'm not saying they will), mine will also do so - original block and heads. The LS3 is arguably now in no man's land. I don't know too much about this, but I imagine an e-type with, say, an 80's yank motor is probably worth a lot less than a tuned up original.
