Saw this image in the "what car are you obsessing about today?" thread...

I thought that the handle on the petrol pump always showed you which side of the car the petrol cap was.
However, the icon of the pump would indicate the fuel cap is on the right, but the arrow against "Fuel Door" is pointing left (assuming this is what a "fuel door" is..!).

Am I being a numpty?

You thought wrong, that's a particularly strange urban myth.

On my Mazda there is a big fuel pump icon with the handle on the right and a big arrow next to it pointing to the fuel filler which is actually on the left. So no. smile

It's definitely mentioned in a few owner's manuals as the purpose of the arrow. Not sure it's a myth at all.

Oh if there's an arrow, it probably does point to the door. However, the idea that the pump handle always points towards it is a myth.

I've always gone by not which side the nozzle is on but by which way the nozzle is pointing. Never failed me yet and in the OPs orginal picture the nozzle is indeed pointing to which side the tank is on.

Mine is the other way around - nozzle points away from the filler cap.

If your filler cap is on the right, then the nozzle needs to be on the left. For example, as shown in the OP's opening image, the nozzle is on the right of the pump, the filler is on the left of the car. Logically, it's correct.

To coin an irritating phrase, "Simples".

Except my filler cap is on the right hand side... and so is the nozzle in the little picture on the light. The picture has nothing to do with the side the cap is on...

I'm going to guess that it's true in 50% of all possible examples.
