I live near, and work in Brough, near the BAE plant that today has sent everyone home apart from a handful of staff, with the announcement of 900 job losses.

About 10:30 this morning we were inundated with (ex?)workers coming in to buy the local rag on their way homes. We see these chaps every morning on their way in, and TBH it's going to be weird not having that burst of activity around half 6.

One of my friends was on an apprentice scheme with them... his funding has now been retracted, as well as his (admittedly meagre) wage for next year - it's a little late now for him to get anything else sorted out.

Oh, and in the jobs pages today, there were 5 jobs going. One for a science teacher, and four telemarketers.

Wahey.

another blow for Hull, looks like the sites going to be houses?
Shame, I have many happy memories of going to the air show there as a kid, my uncle worked there my grandad and my great grandad, pretty sad for the area, but we can’t compete with India

Permission for 800 houses, stores, and a petrol station on SOME of the airfield. I don't know what is in store for the build up area of the site.

Brough closing has been on the cards for at least 3 years though. Its not really a surprise or shock.

The shock is the Salms and Warton news. Its core business at the Beast that is being hit, the supposed golden boys and next generation income stream. They need the Typhoon wins badly.

More like 10! I know people who got out ten years ago with early retirement who have been warning of this ever since.

Having worked at Warton on Typhoon - and loved it smile , it was a shock to see how deep the cuts were there.

I feel for all those losing their jobs at all three sites.

The lure of selling off land is probably a prime motivation for selling off Brough. Short termism in business is killing this country.

Losing 900 relatively (especially for the area) well paid jobs hardly seems like a good backdrop against which to build 800 new houses.

That's what I thought, too. Unless of course they're going to build some kind on industrial estate next to the houses. Or will they be 'housing association' type dwellings...

ETA - when you see large factories like that, with the skilled workers in them - and all the smaller local shops that depend on them, go - I can't help but feel the UK sinks a notch further down the point of no return. frown

Wrong comment, wrong thread Eric.

Brough isnt viable and hasnt been for quite some time. Its disposal has been a high agenda item for the Beast for many years, indeed they tried flogging it wholesale a while ago and no takers.

The easy meat "for profit" land deals were done back in the last decade as the merger between BAe and MES was put through the rationialisation wringer.

I think Eric's point is vaild in that the demise of Brough adds further to the inexorable downward momentum of the area.

O/T Digga sr. did his engineering apprenticeship whilst working at Priestman's of hull (another company that's now consigned to the histry books) and remembers studying with other apprentices from brough who were, at the time, working on some big hush-hush project for Hawker Siddley - which turned out to be the Harrier.

DJRC has an automatic "disagreement with Eric" mode so I don't worry too much when it manifests itself. He seems to resent me posting - I know not why.

Whether land sell off is relevant to BAE's decision making in this instance or not, I do know that it has been a driver behind quite a few businesses over the past few years.
QinetiQ down here made more money over the past few years from asset disposals than they did from their core activity.

Regarding BAE Systems, I wonder if they rue the day they decided to sell off their civilian aircraft business - particularly the BAe 125 biz jet which is still in production - in Kansas.

I'm sure DJRC will assert it was a "good thing". I'll be intetrested to hear his comment.

Selling off the land to build houses though? Who is going to buy these brand new houses? with the current situation regards jobs in hull the developers are going to struggle to sell houses IMHO.

Deopends on whether there is going to be government su[pport. Cetrtain types of housing attract subsidy. Don't ever discount the perverse ways that seemingly beneficial government policies can actually do more damage to an area than good.

Yes the Govt will of course pay via the monster of housing benefit, on account of the terrible level of unemployment in the local area. You couldn't make it up.

BAE management have been, well not exactly disasterous as the company is profitable, but I can't help thinking they've been asleep on the job. It's now basically a US defence contractor with a captive audience. Compare and contrast with Rolls Royce and look at what it could have been...

And the developers will be probably eligible for a few million in taxpayer
handouts if they stick a useless little windmill on each house.

Say, there's a neat business idea, how about the Govt creating some new "green jobs"? I'm surprised nobody has thought of this idea before.

BAe must have some spare propellers and old fan blades knocking around, or how about a pair of RB199s mounted on a fifty foot pole? Green energy or modern art, you decide. Either way, they are about as economically viable as each other...

Didn't you know, housing and retail is a far better wealth generating mechanism than the pain in the arse stuff of designing and making things!
According to Nu labia economic theory!

I believe there are lots of plans in Hull for new job creation. Well building a new shopping centre anyway rolleyes
