Spent the morning at a car meet organised for PH'ers for the brave guys and girls at Headley Court Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Epsom today which was a thoroughly humbling experience. We spent the morning blasting up and down Headley's lanes, hopefully giving the guys and girls a little bit of a morale boost and annoying a few local residents in the process!

Some of the horrific injuries the brave servicemen & women I met today have had to injure were pretty distressing although their spirit and optimism is more than admirable. I was lucky enough to give a soldier (I wont mention his name)a blast down a few of Headley's lanes and he told me of his plight....

After a tour to Afganistan where he experienced all kinds of horrific events and dodged bullets on a regular basis he returned to the UK and was posted to a barracks in Wales. One night and couple of days before another posting to far away shores he visited a restaurant with a fellow serviceman. After the meal they left the restaurant and were walking to get a cab when they were set upon by a gang of 20 youths. Apparently they had set out to attack some squaddies, my passenger was left crippled with a smashed up leg, his mate was left for dead & received severe brain damage!

His story has left immensely sad, wondering what kind of a world we are living in when a brave young 20 year old can risk his life serving his country and return from a tour only to be brutally attacked by the very people he was serving?

All I can think is that this was a rare event and that, hopefully, the majority of the population have nothing but admiration and total respect for our servicemen & women.

Rare, but not that rare. I know of at least two squaddies that were murdered outside English pubs. They are far from being a bunch of angels after a night out. But the local yokels are, unfortunately a brave bunch when in numbers.

yes

Shocking story, but sadly thanks to the legacy of Blair, Winky and the rest of the fkwits, something that will only increase before it gets better

The scum that attacked them didn't do so thinking that the squaddies were protecting them, they did it as a trophy, thinking that as they're squaddies they're probably tough, so beating them up somehow proves that they're tough as well. Exactly the same mentality in people that beat up bouncers, although to be fair most bouncers are aholes so it doesn't bother me too much.
20 v 2 proves nothing of course. I wouldn't exterminate these people on the spot, but what I would do is send them in to buildings that are suspected to be populated with taliban, so they can take the first bullets.

You can't draw any broad conclusions because of one event, but I do think that some lack an element of respect when it comes to the military. They view them as the ultimate target, and if they can conquer someone in the military, they can conquer anyone. It's a sick mindset, especially as they are in a restaurant/pub to relax.

I think that in the US they are far more willing to give them the respect that they deserve.
