Are we just hearing more about these since the disaster/rescue in Chillie or were the Welsh ones and now another in Yorkshire just freak events?

I suspect your thoughts about just hearing about it because it's deemed more newsworthy at the moment are correct, not that it isn't of course but they so seem to like a theme.

Dog bites are the prime example of this IMO - once one story hits suddenly everyone seems to be getting bitten then it goes quiet again.

Op, many miners are killed in China each month, but you don't hear about it. As another poster has said, it just depends on what the press decide to report at any given time.

Mining is bloody dangerous, Miners die all the time.
Every since the global coverage of the Chillean miners, Journos jump on any trapped miner story just in case they get their own round-the-clock heroic rescue story.
Sadly, they get dead miners.
