How is this right!?

Morning all,
From the Recruiter email this morning...
"Rare (agency) will be targeting graduates from ethnic minority groups, in particular black African and Caribbean backgrounds, for Allen & Overy’s winter and summer vacation schemes, open days and training contract opportunities."
Here is the article... http://www.recruiter.co.uk/1011100.article?cmpid=R...
Surely this cannot be right!? Can you imagine if it they were targetting "white europeans"!?

Don't know.
Is "positive discrimination" legal where certain groups are under-represented?
I know in many public sector organisations you are gauaranteed an interview if you meet the minimum criteria in the Person Spec.

We should be past this by now... best candidate for the job... if that means the entire work force is white, black, asian, pink, green or indifferent... it shouldn't matter!!!

Positive discrimination is illegal: "Tessa Jowell (Secretary of State, Department for Culture, Media & Sport; Dulwich and West Norwood, Labour) Positive discrimination is illegal. We are committed to promoting equality of opportunity in the workplace and selection on the basis of merit. The duties on public authorities to promote gender and race equality and equality for disabled people are part of that commitment."

Positive action, on the other hand, is legal - usually where a particular group is under-represented in the workplace and amounts to things like training or encouraging people to apply, but not as far as giving them a free job, so really not worth stressing about as a fair and consistent recruitment process should apply.
