Hi all
I am new to PH and having looked could not find a thread on buying an SL covering the points I have.
I am looking for a 107 SL but not bigger than 380. Where are the major rust pitfalls outside of the obvious outer sills, wheel arches, wings and boot floor. I have heard that rust affects the soft top stowage compartment, is it possible to check this without stripping someones car also heard that front bulkheads have problems, again how does one check this area, is it carpets out or from underneath or bonnet area. Any major disadvantages regarding 350/380. Should I discount the 280 on performance or is there a real benefit regarding fuel. Finally are there any major mechanical disasters awaiting the unwary with a 90+k mileage car.
I am not new to the classic car scene but my experience is mostly Brits, especially E Types, just looking to go off piste and venture into the Eurozone
Any help appreciated
TIA

There's a million posts about this kind of thing if you can be bothered to look. Buy on condition, not engine. They all use roughly the same amount of fuel; a late-model 500 will use less than a 380; an early 450 will use most of all; but they are all in the 16 to 23mpg bracket. The sixes are nice, the car is lighter in the front, even if they are bit slower in a straight line. Soft top compartment rust: look in the soft top compartment. Bulkhead rust: wet carpets or look under the plastic cover in the centre at the back of the engine compartment, held down with about six screws.
