There are posts about road pricing, and about privatising the motorway network, but not to the extent I'd like to consider.

Could we privatise all roads (auctioning off by local authority), traffic police and council workers that work on the roads?

Bidders would pay for the right to receive the road tax from their area, along with bonuses for absolute and relative improvements in, say:

- journey times
- fatalities
- road condition

They would be free to vary policing and policy on their road network to achieve these aims however they thought most effective. Ie, they might consider:

- clearing MLMs as this would improve journey times and accident rates
- charging those that wish to drive fast and spending money on road improvements (eg you could pay £1,000 to be permitted to do 120mph on motorways)
- a proper trade off between fixed cameras, real police and road improvements

I'm sure that the private sector could come up with innovative ideas given the right incentive structure compared to what we currently put up with.
