Hi,

some advice please, I am now thinking about getting an M3 E92. I have bitten the bullet and discounted the Nissan GTR because of the service intervals..... frown anyway my questions are as follows:-

1) What options are a must especially when you consider what the car would need for good resale value.
2) Is the paddle gear box any good and worth considering. I had an e46 smg which was awesome at full chat on the track but bloody useless and frustrating when driving normal. Delayed gear change etc
3) The stereo in the E46 was also dire so is the stereo any good in the later model or do I need the upgraded one and is that any good.
4) Looking for ipod connection. In the GTR once you plug in the ipod you can select tracks via the in car stereo and the sound was very good. Is the BMW version similar ?

thanks in advance and apologies if these have been answered over and over

cheers

I have just been through the same process, discounted the GTR and ordered an M3. I also had an E46 with SMG which was dire in auto mode but great with the paddles like you say. The new one in auto mode is so much better its like a real auto. I would say go and drive one and see what you think.

As far as options, the competition pack adds 19" wheels (CSL lightweight ones) and EDC plus a few other tweaks. If you look at adding wheels and edc (which I understand is a must) then the cost isnt much less so the comp pack mades sense. You will need the media pack which adds USB and bluetooth. Sat Nav is standard so not much more to add. I have added folding mirrors not bothered with extended leather and also I added the service pack (£1k for 5 years servicing). The first oil change (1500 miles) is £350 ish so it makes sense although the old inspection I and II have gone and replaced with the same system as the regular cars which just tells you which bits need doing and when.

Start stop has been added from April 2010, so if you are looking at nearly new some of the 2011 dealer demo cars are the old ones so check first.

The dealers are also doing great deals at the moment. Look for £3-4k off list plus £7k towards finance if you go that route.

Cant think of much else.

Good luck.

spooky, was just thinking the same, had my e46 2.5 years now, maybe looking to get into a newer m3, what options are a must?

really need the prof stereo upgrade, mine didn't have it, only the business upgrade which has at least tweeters and an amp and is still rubbish, and short of ripping it out and starting again there wasn't much you could do about it. If you only listen to 5 live, ignore me, but if you like to listen to music... I toy with the idea of buying another e92 M3 and would only consider the HK or the Individual stereo.

EDC is the main "must have" to my mind. I bought second hand and immediately ignored any cars without it.

Front parking sensors might be handy because depending on your seating position it can be a smidge difficult to see the front near-side over the bonnet bulge. But maybe that's just me being a wuss!

1) What options are a must especially when you consider what the car would need for good resale value.
In my own opinion I spec'd the following from new.

EDC
Bluetooth
USB
Logic 7
Mine is an Edition model so came with some other stuff as standard but the above was what I wanted. And you'll hear varying opinions on EDC but it IS a good system and trust me on the twisty's it makes a huge diference to the way the car drives.

2) Is the paddle gear box any good and worth considering. I had an e46 smg which was awesome at full chat on the track but bloody useless and frustrating when driving normal. Delayed gear change etc
I test drove DCT but spec'd up manual as i'm a manual person so can't really give much more advice.

3) The stereo in the E46 was also dire so is the stereo any good in the later model or do I need the upgraded one and is that any good.
I got Logic 7 which is excellent, good clarity and more bass then you'll need. You get an equaliser (not sure if this is standard or not?) as well which despite being old school is mch better as you can set things up how you want. Fully recomend Logic 7

4) Looking for ipod connection. In the GTR once you plug in the ipod you can select tracks via the in car stereo and the sound was very good. Is the BMW version similar ?

You need the USB option then you can plug your ipod in and control it all from the i-drive with full functionality. Works perfectly.

Hope that helps a bit.

I'll echo what Ryandoc has said, EDC is just fantastic and adds to resale values, mine is pretty much fully loaded, EDC, DCT, Logic 7 (would not have one without), USB, bluetooth, CD changer, TV function.

Mine is also an edition model (dakar)... Oh, it's up for sale ;-)

Dakar cloud9sperm

Saw one driving down Embankment a couple of days ago, looked the nuts. Would love one after my e46.

Pictures don't do dakar justice, I originally went to buy a monte Carlo one but they had the two parked side by side and I was sold there and then... The black roof, mirrors, grills and wheels contract nicely against it.

I had a Dakar e36 M3. Before I owned it I wanted a Estoril blue motor but after seeing Dakar in the metal I loved it.

If I could have got a e46 with Dakar it would be awesome but they are really rare frown

Never seen an E46 in Dakar so must be very rare, the nice thing with it being on the E92 is the contrast with the carbon rooft, and gloss mirrors, wheels, kidney grils and bonnet vents.

No the wheels are not light weight, they are regular cast wheels. The light weight wheels are the 220M 19" forged alloys.

OP, the standard stereo is the usual piss poor BMW standard. Go to logic 7 / HK at least or better still the Individual Audio.

Also ditto ryandoc's comments + front PDC + DAB. Wow a lot of m3cutters responding to this post. Also I prefer the sharper drive and turn-in with the 19" 220M alloys. Best to test some cars and decide for yourself.smile

thanks for all the responses guys.

everyone seems to say the same about the EDC. Is this something that really notices when driving and if so what affect does it have ??

You get 3 settings, comfort, sport and sport+

It's basically an adaptive suspension setup. Comfort allows more travel so to speak so nice for motorway driving. Then Sport+ stiffens things up and really plants the car on the bends when you're on the twisty's. Then sport is a halfway house setting.

Works really well and you'd have to be daft not to notice the difference between the settings
