While I was younger I devoted all my time and effort to getting better and better cars. Iv had all sorts from the hot hatch to a Tvr cerbera, evo and m3. With plenty in-between. Problem is I've now had to grow up a nd buy a house. Boo. So much of my budget is now gone. After my e46 m3 I got a 182. Thinking it would be good fun. And it is but I looks dull has no occasion about it and it makes me sad each day I look at it.

Find me a cure for my ph blues.
3k max (ish)

No restrictions insurance etc not an issue.

Currently thinking e34 m5 or e36 m3 but had the 3 and it didn't end well twice.

Also thinking rx8 but they blow up. Always wanted to take a rotary to bit though.

They don't, but there are many neglected ones, there was a thread recently about cars not maintained and the RX-8 popped up a few times, owned by people who really didn't know what they had and how to look after it.

Find a maintained one and it will be fine. I've had mine for over a year and no problems. Maintaince of the RX-8 is checking oil and fluid levels and then red lining the mother fking hell out of it!

You need to work out what it is about cars that you enjoy. I've had lots of interesting cars, and when you've have something with over 600bhp, stepping back and eventually driving a FWD 1.8 litre rust bucket may sound like a terrible place to be in. Now, whilst I miss the hairy rear end action that you get when it rains, there's a certain joy to getting the best out of something so dull - choosing the right gear for a corner, timing gear changes, maintaining momentum up a hill... progressive driving. I don't think I'm less of a PHer because my car wallows, has no power and, frankly, looks and sounds st.

When I had an M100 Elan it always felt a bit special when driving it. In pure Lotus circles you weren't sneered at as such, it's just that you weren't driving a classic or an Elise, but it was good fun.

200bhp is achievable fairly easily (was about £100 for the chip) and you might, maybe, possibly could pick one up for that sort of money.

Also, when I had a Mk2 Fiesta I was never really sure what was about to break or which fluid was going to run out. That's probably not the same sense of occasion you're looking for though

You have never had a 4x4 before (I don't think) so why not get something totally different?

Get a jeep cherokee xj, or something smaller like an sj.

it's something totally different, and a completely different way to have fun.

Yeah I see what your saying but just cant see how they can be any fun on road. And even if I found some where to off road I still want the on road sence of occasion

I went from Jeep XJ to a Skyline. The skyline was awesome, so much fun... but somehow I found myself longing for the XJ!

The ability to go offroad at any point is amazing, they also have 200bhp, so aren't that slow and handle very well. You're outlook on driving becomes very different when you're in one, and though you way think you'd want better handling/faster car it gives you something completely different.

Honestly if you haven't had an offroader before, then do, it's well worth it.

4x4 action? It is getting wintery. Was looking myself for a bit of greenlaning in the snow.

Agree with "Remain"

What is it want from it?

Head turner?
Something different?
Fast?
Good handler?
Fun?

Can all be done on a budget!

Fast, go Jap turbo nutter. Good handler & fun, uniquitous MX-5. Head turner/different - classic of some kind?

As an example, I still love my Saab 900 T16S. Not quick by modern standards, entertaining drive but bettered by lots of other stuff. But I get a sense of occasion from driving it! Love the sounds, smells, looks, and the feel of driving something different to everybody else on the road. Love it.

Have a think about what you really want from the car!

CBR/GSXR/ZX6r/R6

Cheap, lots of sense of occasion, exciting to look at, more fun than any of the cars you have mentioned, cheapish on fuel, cheap tax, cheap insurance sorted.

I've been driving a Jeep Liberty for the last 2 weeks - admittedly in Utah but it has been great - if you are in the countryside and get an OS map and see where you can drive off road, I until last week never drove a 4x4 and i've had a great time looking at the map and picking the off road tracks instead of road it's so different and a lot of fun.

If you are a town / city person then try a tuned jap turbo nutter mobile, not all of them make you look a chav. The frightening change in power of something like an MR2 with a GT30 turbo strapped on and 450bhp, although no faster than a Cerb will feel like it is as it come on boost.

Jaguar XJ8 - you'll get a good one for this money and they always feel special.
Mercedes S class (80's shape)
Mercedes W124 Coupe (saw a nice one for sale at that kind of money)
Rover SD1 V8 - a good one will still sound and look stunning.
Range Rover Classic
Alfa 166 V6
Alfa GTV6
BMW 635 - An 80's coupe that will start appreciating. You just need to find a mobile phone the size of a brick to go with it.
VW Passat W8
TVR S3
If you've got a garage how about a kit car? You can buy unfinished Locosts for a grand from ebay or you might even get lucky with a Westfield (not for £1000).

The 944's been mentioned already

A really good MX5, MG TF or MR2 MK3. Not fast but plenty of fun and cheap to run.

There was a Bentley 8 that the dealer described as ropey.
