Another genius from the classifieds
Discussion
Just browsing the classifieds as you do and came across this gem... Cavalier GSi, OK you may think, but its had an engine transplant, OK nothing new there, its got a V6 in it but still registered as a 2.0
, wait for it, the owner claims its got a 3 litre crank and revs to 13000rpm

13000.
Has he got a problem with the revcounter being set up for the old 4 pot engine and it is reading 6 now ?
Head-based mathes suggests that 13000 divided by 6 and multiplied by 4 is about 8600 rpm.
Not sure if the rev counter works off spark pulses like it does in my V8 but when I built that I had a hell of a job converting the revcounter to read half what it was seeing as sparks.

I'm no vauxhall geek, but why is it laughable that it's got a 3.0 crankshaft fitted?
13000rpm is quite funny though.
I think its more the claim that simply fitting 3.0 crank means you get an extra 6000rpm over stock.13000rpm is quite funny though.
I do like the casual way he mentions he "guess its done about 3000 miles since he's had it"........I am guessing the speedo is no longer able to confirm this.

That is a bit of a shame actually.
I really like the saloon Cavaliers and quite fancy one as a bit of a BTCC rep track slag rather than yet another E36 BTCC rep.
Still, it's quite cheap and it's not far from me...

This shape Cavalier GSI really is a wonderful shape compared to both its contempories, and modern equivilent sized family cars ...... e.g. a Corsa maybe? This generation of family saloon (including the Sierra and Primera as examples), really were perfectly sized for the job of family motoring, and go to highlight just how bloated and overweight modern machinery has become.

Nobody has commented that a 3 litre engine is likely to be a six cylinder.
So, how the frog do you fit a longer crank, with extra journals in the space previously occupied by a four cylinder crank?
Duh, read the advert, its had a 2.5 V6 transplant...So, how the frog do you fit a longer crank, with extra journals in the space previously occupied by a four cylinder crank?
Of course it will rev to 13,000 (once, briefly)
Simply hit 100 mph in top and then drop it into first.
This is either a typo or someone who is fond of perpetuating car based urban myths, like those people who put a 1.1 box in an XR31 and believed it would then out accelerate an F1 car "Cos its got a 1.1 box in it innit", why Ford never pulled this shrewd performance coup we will never know, so not a 3.0 crank which if anything would be a longer stroke for the bigger capacity and rev less readily, or exactly the same if the 2.5 is a larger bore version of the 2.5 ? perhaps it is a slightly lighter crank and does rev higher but probably not double !

Couple of question for the more "mechanically minded" PH'ers
Assuming it really HAS had a 3 litre crank fitted (and Shaun isn't the kind of guy who goes around buying magic beans...)
Would it have to be a crank specifically for a 3 litre Vauxhall engine(i.e. taken from a carlton GSi for example)?
Or would any crank with a 3L displacement fit (in which case all the timing would need to be re-done)??
Or has somebody worked out all the various measurements and built a new crank from scratch?
And how does a 3L crank fit into a 2.5L sump?
TIA

Vauxhalls V6 engines are all based on a pretty much a common platform so the 2.5, 2.6, 3.0 and 3.2 all have interchangable bottom ends etc etc so you can effectively turn the 2.5 V6 Cavalier into a 3.2 or anything in-between with a bit of fiddling.
These V6 engines are found in the Cavalier, Calibra, Vectra and Omega. Senetor and Carlton used the straight 6 lump.
None of them however rev to 13k
