British man attacked after ignoring the warning signs it seems, lost both legs and is in critical condition.

Fair play to him, you take and accept the risks of entering the ocean and he seems to have acknowledged that.

Hope he pulls through, but most of all hope they dont try to take it out on sharks now and go hunting for them, at least in SA they tend to have a "it's up to you, if you do something, there are consequences, we wont protect you from yourself" attitude, I prefer that to always providing endless safety nets to stop people hurting themselves.

Apparently the shark is on the last leg of its African tour.

Well, if he ignored the risks then so be it.

As above, I do hope that this doesn't result in any shark hunting.

Until he returns and claims disability. FFS, there were warnings. It's idiots like this who get out their cars to take pictures of the cuddly lions.

I mean fair play to him saying he acknowledges the risk, and if anythign happens it's his fault, if he's happy to take the risk then so be it. Whether he maintains that view with no legs we'll have to wait and see.

Great whites are harder to find than perhaps people realise, and this may be why he ignored the warnings?
If you go there to do a cage dive then you can spend a couple of hours trying to lure them in before a sighting - incidently i did this myself a couple of years ago, as am pretty sure that tragic events like this will shorlty lead to cage dives being outlawed and viewed it as one of the last opportunities to see one close up. I suppose that makes me a bit of a hypocrite.
As he lived in SA, you would expect that he was familiar with the frequncy and locations of sightings, so perhaps by staying close to the shore he felt as though the risk was fairly slim.
Saying that he wasn't too far from where they take people cage diving so he was certainly increasing his risk away from the safer beaches. Incidently the guys who swim out to illegally poach abalone close to seal island - which isn't too far away, these guys are the real nutters - they swim a fair distance off shore, straight through the main shark thoroughfare to get to the abalone and are quite often lost to sharks. Funnily enough you tend not to hear about these guys.
Its a shame that we continue to meddle with, and encroach into their environment.
