Fiesta TDCI fuel issue
Discussion
Hi all, I have recently bought an 05 1.4 TDCi fiesta from a Ford main dealer and am having an issue with it. I was given a 30-day warranty with the car and this problem manifested itself about 10 days into ownership. The car will be going in for them to look at it, but I'd like to see if anyone has had a similar problem and what the result was.
Basically what happens, is that when the car is left parked for any great length of time, the fuel drains back into the tank, away from the engine. Now when I go to start the car the starter motor works fine but the engine will not turn over.
What I have to do 9/10 times, is open the bonnet, and pump a small black rubber bulb. This sucks the fuel from the engine into two fuel pipes that run under a cover on top of the engine block.
The amount I have to pump the bulb depends on the amount of fuel in the tank, but after a little time the air is removed and I am able to start the car normally.
Any advice/experience you have on this would be greatly appreciated!
Ben

That's the thing, I informed the garage as soon as the fault developed (11 days into ownership). They initially told me that I could have the repairs made and they would pay me the costs incurred (I live 100+ miles from the dealer), which I was happy with. However as I am shortly on a course in the area I have decided to take the car in for them to sort out (in about ten days time).
I have phone records of my calls to them (as well as the AA!) so if they attempt to dodge the issue I am up for a fight.
The car is drivable and I've been using it for 100+ mile trips, it's just more of an annoyance which I believe should not be present on a car sold under the banner of a main dealer after just 11 days.
I've a feeling that at best it's a leaky pipe, letting air into the system, at worst it is a faulty injector, and on a diesel, injectors mean $$$...
I'll hand it over and take it from there. The salesman is playing fair so far so hopefully they will sort it out, especially as I informed them as soon as the fault developed.

It's called, surprisingly enough "drain back" and it's where you either have a leak in the fuel system which allows air in and this allows the fuel to drain back into the tank.
or
If the car has an in-tank pump, this pump is faulty and not pushing the fuel up when you switch the ignition on.
The problem can be simple to fix i.e. a small leak in a pipe somewhere or can be more serious i.e. a failed in-tank pump.
It all depends what they diagnose.

Very common problem, this engine is a hdi unit built by psa, what it is is the air filter located on the top of the engine has vibrated through a fuel pipe underneath which are clipped into the rocker cover.
Pipes have been modified, bit of a bugger to fit and cost about £65
Once the air filter housing is removed look towards the right hand side of the engine, you will find the pipe that goes into the fuel filter will have a small pin hole created from vibrations, whilst your there check the leak off pipes on the top of the injectors.
Cheers, Carl

Cheers Carl, I never did get to bottom of how the filter housing was the cause.Pipes have been modified, bit of a bugger to fit and cost about £65
