I have this crazy idea that I want to buy a Freightliner/Peterbilt/Mack truck, easy to source in the US but worried about getting it MOT'd etc etc.

Been searching for a long time online with no real success, anyone have an idea where to source a truck that is ready to ride?

Without a Group C / HGV Class 2 licence Id worry about trying to get it under 7,500 kilogrammes.

don't quote me on this, but i "THINK" that if you remove the trucks 5th wheel, its no longer a commercial vehicle, for hire/reward etc, so may be ok on a car licence. not a 100%
and if you get one, go for one with a double eagle sleepereek

Paul Scase bought this Pete brand new from the US, it was never registered as a truck, instead it was registered as a motorhome.

I got C+E so no worries there :-)

removing the fifth wheel makes it legal to drive without the trailer endorsement thats the only "benefit". Mr Eubank doesn't (as far as I know) have C+E but only C that's why he removed it from his (I guess)

A Cat C licence entitles you to drive a (goods) vehicle over what, 7.5 tonnes (?). The E bit as you say is the trailer.
A Cat C driver can legally drive a tractor unit without a trailer, with the fifth wheel remaining. It's still a (rigid, goods) vehicle over (whatever) weight, just not a very good one. If that makes sense...

That is actually not correct, spoke to the examiner about this and he insisted that if the fifth wheel was on the lorry was capable/made for trailer only and therefore required a C+E.

C is above 7.5 tonnes to 38 tonnes. C+E gives you the trailer and maximum train weight of 44 tonnes.

That doesn't sound right. I've got a C licence, and I can drive whatever truck/lorry I like without a trailer, and as long as the trailer doesn't weigh more than 750kg then that's ok too.
At least these are the rules in Scandinavia, and they are touted as EU wide rules.

Must be a bit weird driving a 38 tonner with a 750 kg trailer :-)

I hope you're right and it makes sense, why would removing a fifth wheel make any diffence, my examiner insisted though, I got C+E so I don't really care anyway :-)

I have an interest in trucks too. I had Mack and Kenworth posters on my wall as a lad.

Personally I'd prefer an aussie tuck in the UK, being a RHD. They still like using the old Macks over there.

C has no upper weight limit; you can drive anything so long as it is rigid. This include tractor units, which dont need to have their coupling removed. Removing the fifth wheel doesnt allow a vehicle which weighs over 7.5 tonnes to be driven with anthing other than an HGV licence. This is 'the fifth wheel myth'.

I always thought that Chris Eubank had a car licence with grandfathered C1; and that his tractor unit weighed under the limit - quite easy for a four wheeler and possible for a six.
