Judging by some of the strage looks i had this evening i think i might be entirely alone in thinking that the best thing about convertibles with glorious sounding petrol engines, is hooning them down country lanes - on balmy evenings in the dark.

Is there a law that says it has to be sunny?

If you've never had such an experience i cannot recommend it too highly.

If I'm in the MX5 and it's not raining the roof is down smile

Drove back to Leeds from Newcastle on Tuesday evening with the hood down, set off about 6.15 and arrived home at 8.00, it was far more pleasureable than had I been in a tin top.

I agree. Also during the odd winter sunny day with the heater on full.

Totally agree. Love going for a spin on a lovely summers evening with the roof down. I tell you what else is great, crisp winters morning, roof down and heaters on full blast, its a great feeling as you waft along with a smile on your face especially when you get greeted by some really confused looking onlookers.

Hoods are like umbrellas. Only up when it's raining! Or the missus demands it 'cause it's night, cold, and I had the roof down on the way out. must fit some heated seat pads... biggrin

Great feeling and the car goes better, a cold day, heaters on, works well. You do get strange looks at night on fast roads, A run back from Silverstone in the dark with roof down (its never up) caused a few strange looks on the A14. A blast around Norfolks good driving roads, its better at night anyway, so who cares what others think.

I love it. Roof off out in the sticks, clear sky above, really nice.

Roof off in town, strange looks and lots of noise from the exhaust resonating off the buildings, makes me feel like a child.

Love driving a convertible on a warm night, it's one of life's little pleasures. I always get odd looks when doing so but fk 'em, they're just jealous wink

FWIW my M3 hasn't had its roof up since Sunday, bit annoying in the mornings as it's a bit frosty but either way it's all good fun.

Been doing this for 52 years ever since I graduated (??) from a motorbike (James) to a car (BSA Three wheeler).

The best drives of my life over this time has always been in a convertible with the top down. Best of all on winters night with crisp air, a starlight sky, in the country barrelling along winding B roads.

Nearest thing I can get to bikes much less uncomfortable pure pleasure.

With the heater on and the right conditions I will happily drive 100 miles just like that. Beyond that distance its time to put the roof up and enjoy the sudden reduction in noise and increase in comfort.

Highly recommended

summer, winter..day or night..never a wrong time. There are a lot of steady eddies out there who never do anything individual!!..driving with the roof down at night is one of the great pleasures in motoring, you don't need speed to be having monumental fun.

I also love driving through central London on evenings like tonight top down

the thing I don't understand is how many people I saw today driving around with the roof firmly in place!!..why do these joyless individuals choose to buy a Vert in the first place when they don't even use it as intended on the best days (and one of the last perfect summer days of the year!)..

looking forward to the coming PH Topless Winter Motoring!..

Going at many many leptons on a night like this roof down to the coast = Awesome.

It's quite an adventure when it snows, it certainly was last year when I pulled into a petrol station after roof down in the snow when it was REALLY BAD! The odd scenario when your fuel caps frozen solid proved a novelty.

Either way, the winter will be fun! thumbup

Now I have the car I'm roof off all the time its not raining, absolutley love it, makes every journey an event!

Just need q heater that actually works, as wearing a jacket and trousers to work makes me look even more odd than just having the roof off ( I have also found a use for my snowboarding jacket out of season, which justifies in itself the purchase of a better one)

First time for me was on Tuesday night.

Glorious clear, star filled sky.
Sonorous flat 6 with sports exhaust.
Country road dissecting a forest.

The exhaust sounds even better at night with the roof off.

What's not to like?

Yes, the sound - and how the night effects it somehow - is definitely a big part of it
