hi guys,

my monaro went yesterday.

saddest day of my automotive life!

anyways, i was pondering for a gt jtd ideally under 80k.

are they anythings in particular i should be looking out for in particular to the engines? are they generally pretty strong?

one thing i cant seem to understand is the mpg and tax 42mpg on the combined cycle? why can the GM unit manage 50plus? how is the consumption in real time?

sorry if its been asked before,

cheers.

The 1.9 JTD is a fairly strong unit, I've averaged closer to 48 mpg in the GTs I've run. The later cars badged JTDm do have more probs with swirl flaps and associated emmissions crap.

Mine (2006 JTDM) has averaged 44 mpg over 2500 mostly cross-country A road miles.

Fairly solid machines, watch for regular servicing; cambelt changes, waterpump changes and as above possible issues with emissions-related bits. A search or browse back through the board should reveal all you need to know.

I have touched 60 mpg in my 2007 JTD yikes how did that happen!

40-50 mpg is more realistic though.

The JTD, despite sounding like a tractor on idle is pretty good. I have the 150 bhp version and it goes surprisingly well. I enjoy driving it almost as much as my TVR!

I have the Q2 version which is rare but the LSD is worth the extra agro of finding one.

I paid £3500 for mine, simply because the gearbox was shagged (I don't think this a common problem though, maybe more to do with it's previous owner!)

I thought I really wanted one when they first came out... but the interior was just like the 147 my wife had and the drive felt no different to the 156 I had

I rolled past the dealership one rainy, early morning and as much as I wanted it to whilst my nose was pressed against the showroom window, the GT just never managed to pull me in... the £25k price tag probably played a part in that too

However, for £5k, that one looks nice - but the remap would have me looking elsewhere, but only because I'm daft like that smile

Bought this one today.

Really nice motor, just needs the cambelt and waterpump doing, which we both took into account when bartering.

Pulls well and returns late 40's on the motorway.

Can't go wrong with that!

Does anybody know any alfa specialists in/near leeds that are reasonably priced?

As I need the cambelt, tensioners and waterpump doing.

Cheers trying not to drive it until the above has been sorted.

Another quick one, can dealerships reflash your ecu back to standard?

I may consider getting it done to preserve the life of the clutch, I'm a bit apprehensive about asking angel incase they put a crap stock one on to try and put you off the standard map.

Its also smokes quite a bit when the foot gets put down (can see in the rear view) is this normal for the jtd's?

Sorry to bombard you withall the questions I'm just a bit worried about tuning horror stories!

My standard 150 GT emits a bit of smoke when booted evil , although not as much as my TDV6 Discovery which upsets the tree hugging 4x4 haters even more biggrin

got it booked in turin tomorrow morning for cambelt, waterpump, aux belt and tensioners.

car is 7 year old and 48.000 without a change, knowing my luck it will snap as a wheel in to the garage!

also contacted angel reference the map, according to them they shouldnt smoke even when mapped, unless something is wrong with the car.

tbh i thought all mapped diesels did it and was part of the package i really dont think there is anything wrong with my car.

Yes it's a bit like all V6s must have oil pumps changed at cambelt time. Alfa specialists love to propagate myths in order to make a few quid more, they trade on the brands iffy reputation. Funny how Saab and Vauxhall specialists when doing the same job on the jtd engine don't recommend this.

Why wouldn't you change the pump at the same time as the belt?

If the belt is off it would be silly not to renew it at the same time for what it costs. It is a moving part after all and seized pumps are well documented for belt breakages on AO.
