Head Light Dropped Off
Discussion
I thought I'd take the wedge out for an evening run tonight seeing that he weather is so warm. I like the evening runs because the roads are so much quieter. I switched on the lights and went off. When I pulled up behind another car the reflection of my headlights didn't seem quite right so I pulled up in a pub car park to investigate. I switched the lights off but the nearside light was only half closing. Closer inspection revealed that the square light had moved out of position and was trapped in the pod. When I went to release it the whole light just fell out of the bottom of the car. I could'nt believe my eyes. Anyway I reached down and disconnected the leads and brought the light back home on the passanger seat. The pod though seems to work ok now that the light has been taken out.
Tomorrow I shall try and fit it back. So what holds the light unit in? all I can see is a place for a screw on the top of the lighht and a fuuny looking fitting on the bottom. If anyone has fitted a square light (400se) let me know the details. The do's and dont's. Thanks.

Hi. The lights are simple enough to figure out, as long as you still have all the bits!
The headlight unit is held into the frame with the two adjusting screws/bolts. One top and one on the side ( side nearest the outside edge of the car). These screws (or bolts if original) go through the plate that mounts the whole thing to the pod. There should be a spring between the plate and the headlight. The screw/bolt threads through a captive nut on the headlight. These screws/bolts adjust the lamp for height/sideways beam.
Once the headlight is fixed to the plate it simply screws into the pod with a self tapper on each corner.
Can be fiddly.
I will get a pic on here soon as i can.

Thanks for the info and the pictures guys. I had a go today and successfully completed the job. It was a bit rusty and I had to use a few substitute parts as adjusters from my garage but its all gone on alright and everything is back working again. As for the light adjustment I had to use some guesswork up against the garage wall, but it seems about right to me as its pointing in the right direction and not too high. So job done lads. Thaks again.

Yes Tony, when i took my lights out last month to clean up and paint the mounting plates i discovered that the adjusting bolts were pretty knackered. rusty and also the captive nuts were loose. I got my local to spot weld the captive nuts but then found out the adjusting bolts came out before adjusting the lamps enough. That's why you can see some shiny new nuts next to the adjusting springs. I put some longer bolts in but used the nuts to keep the springs under tension. I just need to remove the lamps again over the Winter and paint the inside of the pods to tidy up.

Does anyone know what car these square head lights are off? If I can get a couple from the breakers together with the backing and adjusters etc. It might be worth changing the whole lot. I'd hate my headlight to fall off again. I mean it's so embarising espacially when you are in the middle of a pose.
