Which is the poit really. It is the overall cost that matters. A cheap ferry to Dunkerque and a 325 mile drive is fine, but then a Portsmouth to Caen overnighter with cabin is dearer but it's only 120 miles from the port and you are relaxed from start to finish. Pays your money and takes your choice.

My sentiments exactly! This year were going to St Malo and coming back from Caen. It's possible to do these without a cabin and save £110 which makes the crossing even more lighter on the wallet.Edited by Vette_1978 on Tuesday 4th October 07:02
Prices havent changed for me! Dover - Calais with either Seafreance or P&O is £40 odd return. I did a quote near xmas for Norfolkline and that was £8 each way! (+£12 fuel surcharge).
Portsmouth > caen is expensive, but its much less driving for us, and worth the money. That has gone up £10 on what I paid last year.

We live in Kent so Dover for us and we enjoy the drive. All fares gone up by quite a margin. We are going we'd 13th returning Monday 18th. These are the faresNorfolk Line £84
P&o £100
Seafrance £112
Euro tunnel £138
For the extra I think the tube has it. . . . . . . . .

Thanks for the tip but same as uk. Not really fussed but to think we got Seafrance return tickets in 2009 for around £48 return, three years on it's £112 !!!!! 
We go out via St Malo on the Wed Night from Pompey - long crossing but a couple of beers, dinner and cabin - but come back from Caen first thing Monday with an overnight in Ouisterham on the Sunday. Very civilised, not the cheapest but suits us...we live in Hampshire so the drive to the Tunnel, plus the drive the other side may be cheaper but we feel more relaxed going via Pompey.

Hi, try out this page here for deals. They do that old trick of 'from' prices though. I really don't like it, I'd rather much have an average price for an average time than know that if you travel at 3am you 'can' find a ferry for £5.99! Second that. Booked my lot in with cabins. Worked out just under £100 each.Straightforward drive the other end as well.
